The Bay of Islands on the northern coast of New Zealand's North Island is a maritime paradise with over 140 subtropical islands and a profound history. Outstanding sights include the historic Waitangi Treaty Grounds, the picturesque coastal town of Paihia, and charming Russell, New Zealand's first capital. Cruise ships usually anchor in the sheltered bay, with passengers arriving safely at Waitangi Wharf via tender boat. From this central landing point, a short, scenic walk or a convenient shuttle leads directly to the center of Paihia, located about two kilometers away.

Returning to the ship
The picturesque Bay of Islands is visited as a tender port, where passengers reach the Waitangi Wharf near Paihia directly using the ship's own boats. Access to the region is primarily via the international hub of Auckland and is supplemented by local connecting services as well as well-developed highways.
Airplane
Travelers from the DACH region first fly to Auckland Airport (AKL), New Zealand's largest international airport. From there, you can reach the regional Bay of Islands Airport (KKE) in Kerikeri with a short connecting flight of about 45 minutes, with the domestic airport located only around 25 kilometers from the landing stage in Waitangi and offering fast taxi connections.
Transfer & Rental Car
The drive from Auckland to the north takes about three to four hours via State Highway 1 and State Highway 11 and leads through impressive coastal landscapes. On site in Paihia, public parking spaces as well as private transfer services and long-distance buses such as InterCity are available, which conveniently bring guests directly to the shore area and the Waitangi Wharf.
Pre-Cruise Hotel & Stay
Due to the time difference and the long journey, a stay of at least one night in Paihia or Russell is recommended before the start of the cruise. Many accommodations are located in the immediate vicinity of the water and allow for a relaxed morning on embarkation day, while simultaneously providing space for exploring the historic Waitangi Treaty Grounds.

Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and consider that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
