Dürnstein is the picturesque heart of the Wachau and one of the most sought-after destinations on any Danube cruise through Austria. Nestled in a UNESCO-protected landscape of rolling vineyards and rugged rocks, the town radiates an unmistakable medieval charm thanks to its historic alleys. Among the most significant highlights are the magnificent Stift Dürnstein with its iconic blue-and-white church tower, as well as the Burgruine Dürnstein towering over the town, where King Richard the Lionheart was once held captive. The ships dock directly at the central Dürnstein moorings, from which travelers can easily explore the romantic old town and the cozy Heurigen on foot in just a few minutes.
The idyllic cruise port of Dürnstein, in the heart of the Wachau, is easily accessible thanks to its proximity to Vienna and excellent connections to Lower Austria's transport network. The docking points are located directly on the Danube promenade, offering short, barrier-free access to the charming town center.
Car
You can reach Dürnstein via the Westautobahn A1 and the S33 or, coming from Vienna, via the Stockerauer Schnellstraße S5, which leads directly into the Donaustraße B3. For embarkation, the public parking lots P1 (East) and P3 (West) are available; additionally, specialized providers in the nearby district capital of Krems offer secure long-term parking including a transfer directly to the ship.
Train
The nearest long-distance railway station is Krems an der Donau, which is regularly served by Regionalexpress trains directly from Vienna Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof or the Hauptbahnhof. From Krems station, you can reach the port in Dürnstein comfortably in about ten to fifteen minutes by taxi or bus line 715, while in the summer months, the tourist Wachaubahn additionally provides a picturesque journey.
Airplane
Vienna International Airport (VIE) is located around 100 kilometers away and serves as the central gateway for international guests from Germany and Switzerland. The travel time by rental car or an organized shuttle service is approximately 75 minutes; furthermore, due to the convenient location, a pre-cruise overnight stay in Vienna or Krems is recommended for a relaxed start to your river cruise.
