Melk is considered the picturesque gateway to the Wachau and, thanks to its location directly on the Danube and its excellent connection to the Austrian trunk road network, is an easily accessible port. The ship docks are located near the center at the so-called Hafenspitz, within direct sight of the imposing Benedictine Melk Abbey.

Car

Via the Westautobahn A1, you can quickly reach the Melk exit from the direction of Vienna or Salzburg and proceed directly to the terminals on the banks of the Danube. Spacious parking areas are available directly at the Hafenspitz on Rollfährestraße, allowing for uncomplicated vehicle parking thanks to modern payment options via the EasyPark app and fair daily rates.

Train

Melk station is located on the traditional Westbahn line and is regularly served by regional express trains and Railjets with a change in nearby St. Pölten. From the station square, you can reach the docks on the riverbank after a relaxed walk of about ten to fifteen minutes through the historic town center or, alternatively, comfortably by one of the waiting taxis.

Airplane

For air passengers from Germany or Switzerland, Vienna International Airport (VIE) serves as a central hub, located around 110 kilometers from Melk. Onward travel to the port takes about 70 minutes via private shuttle services or rental car using the motorway; additionally, the direct train connection from the airport station via St. Pölten represents a reliable and comfortable alternative.

Melk Abbey

Returning to the ship

The return journey from the imposing Benedictine Abbey or the historic old town to the banks of the Danube in Melk is very pleasant and straightforward.

On Foot

From Stift Melk, you can stroll comfortably via the Stiftsstiege and through the charming pedestrian zone in about 15 minutes directly back to the piers at the Donaulände. The paths are easy to find thanks to clear signage toward the Danube and ship stations and lead safely through the town's picturesque alleys.

Taxi

Taxis are available at Rathausplatz and the Melk train station and will take you safely to the port area in just a few minutes. Additionally, staff in the local cafés of the old town or at the reception of Hotel Post will be happy to call a car for you so that you reach your ship punctually and comfortably.

Local Transport

During the season, a small tourist train connects the most important sights with the center and brings you back to the vicinity of the riverside promenade in a relaxed manner. The central location of the piers also allows you to use the departure times of the regional buses at the train station for an easy return from the surrounding Wachau area.
