Introduction: The very first Cruise

Introduction: The very first Cruise

Do I choose a large ship or a small one? Do I have to tip? How much baggage can I bring?

When I started working for Seascanner more than two years ago I didn’t have answers for any of these questions. New to the scene I didn’t know the intricacies of the vacation at sea.

In may 2014 the time had finally come - my first cruise was coming up - boy, I was so excited! But the worry of missing the departure or getting sea sick kept me sceptic, just as much as the prevalent prejudices: Only seniors take cruises. You’ll only meet suits in the evening hours. Everywhere are animators waiting to ambush you.

For my first cruise I didn’t choose any ship, I chose the Norwegian Star - a cruise ship from Norwegian Cruise Line, which offers capacity for more than 2,300 passengers. Back then that number seemed astronomical to me and I thought “What a giant ship!”. Today I know this was only the beginning of the booming cruise business.

Life Buoy of the Norwegian Star

An American cruise line right away - what was I thinking? Do they even understand me? Do I need a passport even though I’m travelling within Europe? Even before the cruise had begun I already had a thousand questions. And it didn’t stop on board: What do I do with this board card? What is inclusive and what isn’t? And most important of all: What am I wearing?

But all questions and worries are gone when the first breath of ocean air fills your lungs and you look across the sheer endless ocean.

On Board of the Norwegian Star

In short: My first time on a cruise was better than expected, I even went again and will continue to explore the seas on board cruise ships!

You’ve never been on a cruise? Then this is the place for you. You’ll find all the information you’ll need about the life on board and the best destinations.
