Port information & tips for Gorinchem
Gorinchem is a charming fortified city in South Holland and is considered one of the best-preserved historical jewels in the Netherlands. Its idyllic location at the confluence of the Linge and Merwede rivers gives the city a maritime flair and offers an atmospheric journey into the past, thanks to its medieval architecture and extensive ramparts. Highlights include the imposing Grote Kerk with its characteristic tower and the historic Waterpoort city gate, which also serves as an iconic photo motif. River cruise ships dock at the central Buiten de Waterpoort landing stage, which is located directly on the edge of the historical city center, allowing for a direct, five-minute walk to the picturesque alleys and sights.
Gorinchem is an ideal starting point for river cruises through the Netherlands and is easy to reach thanks to its central location in South Holland. Ships usually dock directly at the Buiten de Waterpoort quay, which is located right on the edge of the historic old town and provides a picturesque backdrop for embarkation.
Car
The port is directly connected to the European long-distance road network via the Gorinchem motorway junction, where the important North-South and East-West connections A15 and A27 meet. You can park your vehicle at the Buiten de Waterpoort car park or in the nearby Kazerneplein parking garage, both of which are just a few minutes' walk from the piers and offer practical parking for the duration of your trip.
Train
Gorinchem station is located on the MerwedeLingelijn and is excellently connected to the international rail network from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland via the major hubs of Utrecht Centraal or Dordrecht. From the station, you can walk through the charming center directly to the harbor in about 15 minutes or use one of the available taxis for convenient luggage transport, which will take you to the ship's pier in just a few minutes.
Airplane & Pre-Cruise Hotel
The international airports Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) and Rotterdam The Hague (RTM) are located within a radius of about 45 to 75 kilometers and are quickly accessible via good train connections or rental car transfers. Due to Gorinchem's award as the most beautiful fortified city in the Netherlands, we recommend arriving the day before to stay in one of the historic hotels in the old town and enjoy the special atmosphere of the ramparts before the start of the cruise.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The following also applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
