Returning to the ship

The cruise port of Funafuti in Tuvalu is an extremely remote destination in the South Pacific and can only be reached from the DACH region via Fly & Cruise. Due to the very long journey and specific flight connections, a pre-cruise overnight stay is recommended to start your cruise adventure relaxed. The port on the Fongafale Atoll features a ship pier and a small dinghy dock.

Airplane

Funafuti International Airport (FUN) is the only airport in Tuvalu and your point of arrival. Travel from the DACH region usually requires flight connections via major international hubs such as Singapore or Hong Kong, followed by a connecting flight to Nadi (NAN) in Fiji. From there, the final flights to Funafuti (FUN) are mostly operated by Fiji Airways. Plan for a total travel time from Europe of at least 30 to 35 hours of pure travel time.

Transfer & Shuttle

After landing at Funafuti International Airport (FUN), which is located in the immediate vicinity of the main settlement Vaiaku, you can easily reach the pier or your accommodation. Taxis are available, and local shared minivans are a cost-effective option for short trips. Many accommodations are even within walking distance of the airport.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Given the long flight duration and the fact that Funafuti International Airport (FUN) only operates during the day and flights can be cancelled in bad weather or due to delays, arriving at least one day before embarkation is strongly recommended. Numerous lodges and hotels are located in Funafuti, often just a few minutes' walk or a short taxi ride from the airport, providing an ideal starting point for a relaxed embarkation.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that your travel documents usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The following also applies during the trip: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always observe the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.

The Funafuti Conservation Area is an untouched natural paradise and can be easily reached with a short boat transfer of about twenty minutes from the harbor. This protected marine area offers crystal-clear, turquoise water and secluded sandy beaches on the small Motu islets, making it ideal for an excellent snorkeling experience amidst an intact underwater world. Thanks to its secluded location, you can enjoy complete tranquility here as well as an impressive biodiversity of colorful fish and corals. Returning to the ship

Funafuti is wonderfully manageable, and the journey back to the ship is very relaxed thanks to the short distances on the main island of Fongafale.

Motorcycle taxis and private drivers

In the immediate vicinity of the Vaiaku Lagi Hotel and at the central government building, you will find reliable private taxis as well as the motorcycle taxis popular in Tuvalu. The drivers will take you quickly to the Deep Sea Wharf in the north of the island, and you can comfortably enjoy the fresh sea breeze during the short ride.

On foot via the main road

Minibuses and local shared taxis

Small local minibuses run regularly along the main road and stop simply on hail to chauffeur you directly to the port entrance. Also, look out for the notices at the pier regarding the last tender departures so that you arrive back on board your ship completely stress-free thanks to a small time buffer.
