Cruise port Chuuk Island
Port information & tips for Chuuk Island
Chuuk, formerly known as Truk, is a fascinating destination in the Federated States of Micronesia and is considered a true paradise for explorers thanks to its eventful history. The picturesque lagoon enchants with emerald green water and a unique atmosphere of lush vegetation and historical relics. Highlights in the immediate vicinity include the historic Xavier High School building, a former Japanese base, and the impressive Truk Lagoon with its world-famous underwater treasures. Cruise ships dock at the Weno Commercial Port (Weno Pier), which is located directly in the main town of Weno and provides convenient access to local markets and the island's idyllic coastal sections.
Chuuk in the heart of Micronesia is an exclusive travel destination primarily reached by plane. Since it is a tender port, cruise passengers are taken by smaller boats from the ship to the commercial dock on Weno Island. A dedicated cruise terminal does not exist in this remote port.
Airplane
Chuuk International Airport (TKK) on Weno Island is the only airport with scheduled flights. For travelers from the DACH region, routes generally lead through major hubs such as Tokyo, Seoul, Manila, or Honolulu to Guam (GUM), from where United Airlines offers direct connecting flights to Chuuk. The flight time from Guam to Chuuk is approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes. An alternative, scenic way to arrive is the so-called "Island Hopper" by United Airlines, which stops at several islands.
Transfer & Shuttle
Since Chuuk has no public transportation, taxis are the primary and most reliable transport option on Weno Island. Distances on Weno are short; the drive from the airport to most hotels takes only 10-20 minutes. Many hotels and dive operators on Weno organize transfers from the airport to their accommodation or the port. It is advisable to book the transfer in advance to ensure a smooth journey. Taxis are usually available upon arrival at the tender pier, and the fare should be agreed upon with the driver in advance.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long journey from Europe and the limited infrastructure, staying overnight in a pre-cruise hotel on Weno Island is strongly recommended. Several hotels, such as the L5 Hotel or the N Cube Chuuk Airport Hotel, are located in the immediate vicinity of the airport and sometimes offer free shuttle services. This allows for a relaxed start to your cruise experience and provides the opportunity to explore the island at leisure before embarkation. It is also important to note that if you arrive very early on the day of embarkation, the transfer to the ship may not be included and a hotel room may need to be booked for the interim.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
