Port information & tips for Mili

Mili Atoll is a pristine natural paradise in the Ratak Chain of the Marshall Islands and fascinates as one of the most remote expedition destinations in the Pacific. The atmosphere impresses with crystal-clear lagoons and palm-fringed beaches, offering an authentic island experience thanks to the warm hospitality of the residents. Impressive highlights include historical relics from World War II, such as Japanese bunkers and aircraft wrecks near Mili Airfield, as well as the species-rich coral gardens of the lagoon. As larger ships anchor in the protected lagoon, shore leave is conducted by tender directly at the small pier of Mili Village. From here, the village center and the surrounding historical sites can be easily explored on foot, allowing for a seamless transition into this peaceful world.

Mili in the Marshall Islands is a remote atoll and is primarily visited by expedition and luxury cruises. Direct travel to the port, as seen with major cruise terminals in Europe, is not possible here. Instead, arrival typically occurs via ship's tender in the protected lagoon.

International Arrival (via plane to Majuro)

Arrival from the DACH region requires an extensive flight journey with several stopovers. The nearest international airport is Amata Kabua International Airport (MAJ) in Majuro, the capital of the Marshall Islands. Typical flight routes from Europe go through the USA, for example Honolulu (HNL), with United Airlines being a frequent connection. Due to the long flight duration of over 30 hours and the time difference, a relaxed arrival at least one day before your planned onward flight within the Marshall Islands or embarkation is recommended.

Onward Journey to Mili (Domestic Flight or Ferry)

Limited onward travel options to Mili Atoll exist from Majuro. Mili Airport (MIJ) has a public runway and is served by Air Marshall Islands (AMI) with small propeller planes. These domestic flights are the fastest option but are subject to frequent schedule changes and availability. Alternatively, there are ferry connections from Majuro to Mili, which can be very uncomfortable and tedious due to sea conditions between the atolls, especially during strong winds. The atoll is located approximately 88 nautical miles (about 163 km) southeast of Majuro.

Pre-stay and Planning Notes

A pre-stay in Majuro is strongly recommended due to the complex travel routes and the often flexible flight schedules to Mili. This allows for acclimatization and provides buffer time for any travel delays. Basic accommodation is available in Majuro, and cruise lines generally coordinate transfers to the cruise ship anchored in the lagoon of Mili. Detailed consultation with the cruise line regarding exact logistics is essential, as the infrastructure on Mili is very limited and there is no direct terminal connection like in large ports.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The following also applies during the trip: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
