Iquitos is the fascinating gateway to the Peruvian Amazon and the world's largest city reachable only by water or air. The lively metropolis delights with its unique blend of colonial splendor, exotic jungle flair, and its direct location on the banks of the mighty river. Architectural treasures include the famous Casa de Fierro by Gustave Eiffel, the magnificent Plaza de Armas, and the atmospheric riverside boulevard Malecón Tarapacá. Cruise ships dock at the Terminal Portuario de Iquitos (Puerto de Enapu), from where the historic center is easily and directly accessible in a short ride of about ten minutes thanks to the typical local motokars.
Iquitos is located deep in the Peruvian Amazon and is primarily reached from the DACH region by plane, as the city has no road or rail connections to the rest of Peru. Travel to the river port therefore usually takes place via the local airport. Due to the long flight time, we recommend arriving at least one day before embarkation.
Airplane
Coronel FAP Francisco Secada Vignetta International Airport (IQT) is the nearest airport and the only gateway to Iquitos for international travelers. There are no direct long-haul flights from the DACH region; travel usually takes place via Lima (LIM), where connecting flights to Iquitos are offered. The flight time from Lima to Iquitos is approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes.
Transfer & Shuttle
From Iquitos Airport, you can easily reach the city center and the various landing stages on the Amazon or its tributaries by taxi or moto-taxi in about 15 to 20 minutes. Many cruise operators and hotels in Iquitos also offer organized transfers that pick you up directly from the airport and take you to the ship or your accommodation. The distance from the airport to the city center is around 7 kilometers.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
For a relaxed start to your Amazon adventure, an overnight stay in one of the hotels in Iquitos on the day before embarkation is highly recommended. This not only provides a buffer for possible flight delays but also allows you to experience the unique atmosphere of the city. Many hotels in the city center or along the Malecón (promenade) are geared towards cruise guests and often offer flexible check-in times and assistance with onward travel to the river ship.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the shipping company and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The following also applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
