Port information & tips for Puerto Chacabuco
Puerto Chacabuco is the impressive gateway to the wild Patagonian fjords and the fascinating Aysén region in southern Chile. This remote port enchants visitors with a rugged landscape of deep blue channels, snow-capped peaks, and pristine rainforests. Particular highlights in the surrounding area include the Río Simpson National Reserve with its spectacular waterfalls as well as the town of Puerto Aysén, where the iconic suspension bridge Puente Presidente Ibáñez stands as a national monument. Cruise ships dock at the Muelle de Cruceros of Emporcha or use tender boats to reach the pier, which is located directly in the small town center and, thanks to its location, provides the ideal starting point for exploration tours into the spectacular wilderness of Patagonia.
Puerto Chacabuco, an important gateway to Patagonia and the Chilean fjords, is usually reached from the DACH region as part of a Fly & Cruise journey. Due to the long journey, we recommend an overnight stay in advance to start your cruise adventure relaxed.
Airplane
The nearest airport is Balmaceda (BBA), located about 55 kilometers southeast of Puerto Chacabuco. It is served by domestic flights from Santiago de Chile (SCL). For international guests from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, a long-haul flight to Santiago followed by a connecting flight to Balmaceda is the most common travel option.
Transfer & Shuttle
From Balmaceda (BBA) airport, you can reach Puerto Chacabuco in about 1 to 1.5 hours. Taxis and private transfer services are available to take you directly to the port. Many cruise lines also offer organized transfers that comfortably accompany you from the airport to the embarkation point.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Given the long journey and potential flight delays, a pre-cruise overnight stay in the region is strongly recommended. Hotels can be found in Coyhaique, the region's largest city, about 75 kilometers from Puerto Chacabuco, or in Aysén, which is closer to the port. This allows for a relaxed start to the cruise without time pressure.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port and consider that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times may change at short notice.
