The port of Runavik-Kongshavn in the Faroe Islands is a picturesque gateway to the stunning landscapes of the archipelago. Cruise ships dock directly at the centrally located King's Harbour (Kongshavn), allowing passengers to reach the town center quickly and easily.
Airplane
The Faroe Islands are primarily reached by plane from the DACH region. The nearest airport is Vágar Airport (FAE), the archipelago's only international airport. Direct flights from Central Europe are rare, which is why a layover is often required. Arriving the day before embarkation is therefore recommended to ensure a relaxed and punctual journey.
Transfer from the Airport
From Vágar Airport (FAE) to the port of Runavik-Kongshavn, the driving distance is approximately 53 to 63 kilometers, allowing a travel time of around 45 to 60 minutes by car. You can easily rent a car at the airport or use a local taxi service, although booking in advance is advisable due to limited availability. The modern Eysturoyartunnilin, with its unique underwater roundabout, connects Runavik directly to Tórshavn and significantly shortens the journey from the airport. For those traveling without a rental car, a Strandfaraskip bus service with a transfer in Tórshavn is available, with a total travel time of about two hours and a cost of around 8 USD.
Arrival by Car in the Faroe Islands & Pre-Cruise Hotel
If you are already in the Faroe Islands and traveling to Runavik with your own or a rental car, you will benefit from the good road connections via bridges and tunnels that link most of the islands. Please note the speed limits of 50 km/h in built-up areas and 80 km/h outside built-up areas. Parking facilities are available in the port area of Runavik; it is important to use a parking disc showing your arrival time to avoid fines. Given the distance and potential flight times from the DACH region, staying overnight at a pre-cruise hotel, for example in Tórshavn or Runavik, is advisable before embarkation to ensure you board the ship relaxed and on time. Numerous accommodations are available for a comfortable start to your cruise adventure.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will generally receive a fixed check-in time slot with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly, and bear in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the cruise: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
