Port information & tips for Endicott Arm (Boundary Ranges, AK)

Petersburg is known as Alaska's charming "Little Norway" and enchants visitors in the Inside Passage with its authentic Scandinavian heritage and a picturesque backdrop of mountains and glaciers. The idyllic fishing village on Mitkof Island impresses with its vibrant maritime culture and offers a pleasantly relaxed atmosphere thanks to its manageable size. Cultural highlights in the immediate vicinity include the historic Sons of Norway Hall, the informative Clausen Memorial Museum, and Eagle's Roost Park for observing majestic bald eagles. Cruise ships usually dock at the North Float in South Harbor, from where the picturesque town center and its quaint shops are easily reachable within just a few minutes' walk.

Petersburg (Alaska) is a remote gem in the Inside Passage that is accessible only by plane or by sea, as there are no road connections to the mainland. The port does not accommodate large cruise ships; instead, it serves as a port of call for smaller expedition ships and private yachts, which often dock at the Petro Marine Dock or a drive-down dock, or transport passengers via tender. The three modern harbors (North, Middle, South) are conveniently located just a few steps from the city center.

Airplane

The nearest airport is Petersburg Airport (PSG), located only about 1.6 kilometers southeast of the city center. Alaska Airlines offers daily jet connections with two flights per day to major cities in Southeast Alaska, such as Juneau, Ketchikan, and Wrangell, as well as onward to Seattle-Tacoma and Anchorage. Upon arrival, local taxis and shuttle services are available to take you comfortably to the port or your hotel.

Ferry (Alaska Marine Highway)

The Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) ferries are another important travel option to Petersburg. The ferry terminal (PSG) is located at Milepost 0.8 Mitkof Highway, about 3.2 kilometers from the city. The ferries connect Petersburg with other coastal communities in Alaska and even offer connections from Bellingham, Washington, for those who wish to bring their vehicle. From the ferry terminal, you can easily reach the city center and the cruise terminals by taxi or local shuttle services, with some hotels also offering a free ferry transfer.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Due to the long journey from the DACH region and the possibility of flight delays, an overnight stay in Petersburg before your cruise is highly recommended. This allows for a relaxed start to your adventure and provides the opportunity to explore Alaska's charming "Little Norway." Hotels such as the Tides Inn, Scandia House, or Nordic House are popular options, and many offer practical services such as free airport transfers. The Tides Inn, for example, is located only about 1.3 kilometers from PSG airport and also provides a free airport shuttle.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that your travel documents will generally provide you with a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan accordingly and allow sufficient time for travel to the port, keeping in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is usually about one hour before the scheduled departure.

The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the latest announcements and the notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.

The port of Petersburg is wonderfully central, offering you direct access to the charming sights of Little Norway. Thanks to the city's compact size, you can reach the most important destinations comfortably and in the shortest possible time directly from the quay.

On foot

Most berths are located in the immediate vicinity of the city center, so you can reach the famous Nordic Drive and local shops in less than five minutes on foot. The level path along the harbor also offers an authentic insight into the life of an active fishing community and invites you to take a relaxed stroll.

Taxi

Local taxis are available at the port and offer a comfortable way for trips across Mitkof Island. They are an ideal choice for excursions to more distant natural sites or to the airport and can also be easily ordered by phone directly to the pier if required.

Bicycles and local shuttles

Directly near the port, you can rent bicycles and flexibly explore the surrounding area and the picturesque coastal roads. At the same time, various tour operators offer coordinated shuttle services to the hiking trails and viewpoints in the area, guaranteeing an uncomplicated connection to the Alaskan wilderness.

To make the most of your limited time in Petersburg, we recommend exploring the picturesque, Nordic-inspired city center combined with the fascinating natural landscapes in the immediate vicinity of the harbor.

Historic City Center & Sons of Norway Hall

This charming district directly at the harbor exudes a unique atmosphere thanks to its Norwegian roots and invites you to an inspiring walk through Little Norway with the magnificently decorated Sons of Norway Hall as well as the typical houses on stilts.

Sandy Beach Park

Thanks to its proximity to the harbor, this extensive stretch of coastline is an ideal place for relaxation and also impresses with its wide view of the sea and the historical indigenous petroglyphs found there.

LeConte Glacier

The southernmost tidewater glacier in North America is perfect for an organized boat trip from the harbor and offers travelers an unforgettable natural panorama thanks to the majestically floating blue icebergs and the spectacular fjord landscape.

Hammer Slough & Sons of Norway Hall

The picturesque neighborhood around Hammer Slough and the historic Sons of Norway Hall is located just a few minutes' walk from the harbor and offers the perfect backdrop for an authentic glimpse into Alaska's "Little Norway." Thanks to the characteristic buildings on stilts and the colorful architecture directly on the water, you can enjoy a unique atmosphere here, which is further enriched by cozy cafes and small art galleries featuring traditional Rosemaling painting. It is best to visit this cultural treasure directly after arrival in the morning to take advantage of the soft light for impressive photos of the fishing boats, and return to the ship relaxed about sixty minutes before departure.

Petersburg is a charming and manageable town where the paths to the ship are pleasantly short and safe. Thanks to the central location of the berths, you can always reach your mooring in just a few minutes after a stroll through town.

On foot

Since most cruise ships dock directly in the center at South Harbor or North Harbor, you can easily walk back to the pier via Nordic Drive. The paths are flat and lead you directly along the water, with the striking wooden houses at Hammer Slough providing a wonderful orientation aid and making the way back to the port a real experience.

Taxi

If you have visited more remote locations like Sandy Beach Park, local taxis are available at Nordic Drive or near the Sons of Norway Hall. Additionally, you can simply ask to order a taxi in the local shops or at the Visitor Information Center to ensure you return to the pier punctually and relaxed.

Shuttle and local transfers

Many local tour operators will take you directly back to the harbor basin after your excursions and drop you off not far from the gangway. Thanks to Petersburg's compact structure and clear signage within the port area, you will find the access to your ship without detours and get back on board quickly.
