Hanseatic spirit from Hapag-Lloyd Cruises : Everything you need to know

The Hanseatic Spirit is Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’ newest expedition ship, combining the highest level of comfort with extraordinary travel experiences in the world’s most remote regions. Thanks to its top ice class, PC 6, it can navigate safely even in the most challenging polar regions and reach destinations that are inaccessible to larger ships. Personalised service, modern facilities and plenty of space for exploration make every voyage a special experience.

In 2026, the Hanseatic Spirit underwent extensive modernisation. Public areas now feature the ‘Inspired by Nature’ design concept, the spa area has been refreshed, and numerous carpeted and tiled surfaces, as well as selected stateroom bathrooms, have been refurbished. The restaurants, the Observation Lounge and the reception area also boast a fresh, modern ambience – for even greater comfort and well-being on board.

Hanseatic spirit sustainability

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises aims to organise expedition cruises as responsibly as possible and to continuously reduce its impact on the environment and nature. The Hanseatic Spirit is equipped with state-of-the-art environmental technology and meets high international standards in the areas of emissions control and environmental protection.

Measures include a low-emission marine diesel propulsion system, the use of low-sulphur fuel, SCR catalytic converters to reduce nitrogen oxides, and shore power connections. Modern systems for wastewater treatment and waste separation further contribute to the protection of the marine environment.

Sustainability also plays an important role on board: the conscious use of resources, the avoidance of avoidable single-use plastics, and the raising of guests’ awareness by the expedition team and expert talks all promote a respectful approach to the natural regions visited. The aim is to combine extraordinary travel experiences with the smallest possible ecological footprint.

Hanseatic spirit entertainment, sports and wellness

On the Hanseatic spirit, the emphasis is on experiencing nature up close. In keeping with the ship’s expeditionary character, the entertainment programme centres on fascinating talks by experts in the HanseAtrium, which provide valuable insights into the regions visited. Guests can then deepen their knowledge through self-study in the Ocean Academy. The wraparound deck area at the bow also allows for impressive close-up observations of nature.

After eventful expeditions, the large spa area – featuring a Finnish sauna, steam room, relaxation area, and beauty and massage treatments – offers soothing relaxation (some services subject to a charge).

Those wishing to stay active can make use of the approximately 100-sqm gym with panoramic views or the pool, which can be used in almost any weather thanks to a flexible canopy.

Hanseatic spirit shore excursions

The shore excursions are at the heart of every voyage aboard the Hanseatic Spirit. Included in the cruise fare are shore landings and trips on the ship’s Zodiacs, which give guests access to remote coastlines, secluded bays and fascinating natural landscapes. Accompanied by experienced expedition leaders, they experience wildlife, landscapes and cultures up close.

Depending on the destination and weather conditions, guests can look forward to a variety of Zodiac tours, shore excursions and guided walks. In addition, individual shore excursions can be booked at an extra cost in many ports, allowing you to get to know the regions you’re visiting even more thoroughly.
