Absolute highlights include the majestic St. Mark's Square with St. Mark's Basilica, the grand Doge's Palace, and the iconic Rialto Bridge. Today, cruise ships use the modern berths in Porto Marghera or the Fusina Terminal at the edge of the lagoon. Returning to the ship

Venice, one of the most fascinating cities in the world, is easily accessible for cruise passengers from the DACH region. Since 2021, large cruise ships no longer dock directly in the historic city center, but primarily use the port of Marghera (Terminal VTP - Venezia Terminal Passeggeri). Smaller ships or ferries occasionally use other docking locations.

Car

Thanks to the well-developed Italian highways, Venice is easily accessible by car. The A4 (Turin-Trieste), the A27 (Belluno-Venice), and the A57 (Tangenziale di Mestre) lead directly to the Venice region and the mainland port of Marghera. Take the "Venezia/Porto" or "Marghera" exit. Numerous secure long-term parking spaces are available for cruise passengers at the VTP Terminal Marghera, and various private Park & Cruise providers near the port offer shuttle services to the terminal.

Train

The most relevant train station for cruise passengers is Venezia Mestre, which is a major hub for long-distance trains from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. From there, you can easily reach the VTP Terminal Marghera by taxi in about 10-15 minutes. Alternatively, you can take a local bus from Venezia Mestre station to the terminal, or continue by train to the main station Venezia Santa Lucia and organize a water taxi transfer from there to explore the city beforehand.

Airplane

The nearest airport is Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE), located only about 15 kilometers from the VTP Terminal Marghera and served by direct flights from many German, Austrian, and Swiss airports. From VCE Airport, you can reach the terminal directly by taxi in about 20-30 minutes. In addition, cruise lines often offer their own transfer buses. Another option is the ATVO Express Bus, which takes you from the airport to Venezia Mestre train station, from where continuing to the terminal is straightforward. For longer flights, we recommend arriving a day early and staying overnight in Venice or Mestre to start your cruise relaxed.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed check-in time slot with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly, and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is usually about one hour before the scheduled departure.

The same applies during the cruise: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.

Highlights & Districts

To experience the magic of the lagoon city at its best, a combination of the world-famous historical center and the charming surrounding islands is recommended.

St. Mark's Square & Doge's Palace

St. Mark's Square forms the magnificent heart of Venice and impresses with the majestic Doge's Palace as well as St. Mark's Basilica, which, thanks to their central location, are perfect for a deep insight into the glorious history of the maritime republic.

Lido di Venezia

This elegant island separates the lagoon from the open Adriatic Sea and offers extensive sandy beaches as well as a relaxed atmosphere; additionally, it is easily accessible by vaporetto and ideal for a restful break by the sea.

Useful tips

San Giorgio Maggiore

The island of San Giorgio Maggiore is located directly opposite St. Mark's Square and is easily accessible by vaporetto line 2 from the central docking piers of the cruise shuttles. It offers arguably the most spectacular panoramic view of the entire lagoon city as well as the prominent silhouette of the Doge's Palace. Taking the elevator up to the campanile of the magnificent basilica is highly recommended, as you can benefit from a pleasant tranquility here and perfectly admire the architectural splendor of Venice from a bird's-eye perspective. In addition, the local café and the well-maintained grounds of the Fondazione Cini with its hidden gardens invite you to linger. It is best to start your excursion directly in the morning to take advantage of the clear light for photos, and plan your return trip to the ship so that you are back at your starting point relaxed about two hours before departure.

Returning to the ship

The return journey to the cruise port in Venice is straightforward and safe thanks to the well-connected infrastructure between the historic old town and the modern terminals. Plan sufficient time for the way back to the ship and enjoy the final ride through the lagoon to the fullest.

People Mover and Shuttle Buses

From the central transportation hub Piazzale Roma, the automated elevated railway People Mover takes you directly to the Marittima cruise terminal in just a few minutes and ensures a stress-free connection to the ship. If your cruise ship is docked on the mainland in Porto Marghera or Fusina, use the organized shuttle buses provided by the cruise lines, which are conveniently available at Piazzale Roma or the Tronchetto parking lot and take you directly to the pier.

Water Taxi and Alilaguna

A private water taxi offers the most comfortable return journey and picks you up directly from your hotel or from official taxi stands such as St. Mark's Square or the Rialto Bridge. In addition, the blue line of the Alilaguna boats connects the main stations of the city directly by water with the berths in the port and, thanks to fixed timetables, enables a punctual arrival directly at the terminal grounds.

On Foot

From the Dorsoduro district, you can easily reach smaller berths like San Basilio via a short walk along the wide Zattere waterfront promenade. Access to the main Marittima terminal from Piazzale Roma is also well signposted and can be reached directly via level paths, though using the elevated railway makes the return journey significantly easier if you have heavy luggage.
