Saqqaq is a picturesque jewel on the west coast of Greenland and impresses with its stunning location on the northern shore of the Vaigat Sound. The settlement enchants visitors with its authentic Arctic atmosphere, colorful wooden houses, and a spectacular panorama of gigantic icebergs drifting in the glittering sea. Cultural highlights include the archaeological excavation sites of the prehistoric Saqqaq culture as well as the historic village church and the fascinating view of Disko Bay. Since the coastal section is too shallow for large ships, they drop anchor at sea. Landing is by tender boat directly at the central pier in the village center, from where all sights can be easily reached on foot in just a few minutes thanks to the compact size of the village.
Saqqaq, a picturesque small village in West Greenland, is a destination for expedition cruises and, thanks to its unique location, is primarily accessible by plane followed by local transfers. Cruise ships anchor off the coast, and embarkation usually takes place via Zodiac or tender boat, as there are no traditional port facilities.
Airplane
Arrival from the DACH region typically leads via Copenhagen (CPH) or Keflavik (KEF) with connecting flights to Greenland, for example to the international airport Kangerlussuaq (SFJ) or Nuuk (GOH). From there, Air Greenland continues to the regional hub Ilulissat (JAV). Ilulissat Airport is the nearest major airport to Saqqaq and is located approximately 93 to 100 kilometers away. Saqqaq itself has a heliport (QUP) with flight connections to Ilulissat.
Transfer & Shuttle
From Ilulissat (JAV), onward travel to Saqqaq is mainly by boat or helicopter. Especially during the season, regular boat transfers, often as RIB boat trips, are available, leading through the impressive Disko Bay and past icebergs, taking about two hours. With certain travel packages, these transfers are already included.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long and multi-stage journey to Greenland as well as the often weather-dependent local transfers, a pre-cruise overnight stay in a hotel in one of the larger Greenlandic hubs like Ilulissat or Nuuk is strongly recommended. This allows for a relaxed start to your cruise and simultaneously offers the opportunity to experience the fascinating Greenlandic culture and nature even before embarkation. In Saqqaq itself, there are only limited, authentic accommodations such as guesthouses or seasonal glamping options.

Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
