Port information & tips for Pillnitz

Pillnitz is a picturesque district of Dresden and, thanks to its location directly on the Elbe, is considered one of the most magnificent river cruise destinations in Saxony. The town impresses with its stately flair and a harmonious blend of Baroque architecture and extensive parklands amidst the Saxon vineyard landscape. Immediate highlights include the magnificent Schloss Pillnitz with its Water Palace and Mountain Palace, the famous Pillnitz Camellia, which is over 250 years old, and the botanically unique Schlosspark. Ships dock at the central Pillnitz pier, located directly below the palace complex, providing direct access to the grounds. Furthermore, the historic center of Dresden is easily accessible from here via the Elbe or by a short transfer.

Pillnitz, known for its picturesque palace, serves as an idyllic mooring point for Elbe river cruises and is excellently accessible from the DACH region thanks to its good connections to Dresden. The ship pier is located directly at the palace; a complex terminal structure is not present here.

Car

Arrival by car is easily possible via the A4 motorways (exits Dresden-Hellerau or Dresden-Altstadt) or A17 (exit Pirna, then continue towards Pillnitz). In Pillnitz, paid parking spaces such as the Leonardo-da-Vinci-Straße car park or Car Park 1 at the palace are available, with daily rates of approximately 3 to 4 euros. Please note possible maintenance periods for the car ferry between Kleinzschachwitz and Pillnitz; in such cases, arrival via the Dresden city area is recommended.

Train and Public Transport

Your destination station is Dresden Hauptbahnhof, an important hub in the ICE network. From there, you can easily reach Pillnitz by public transport. A direct bus connection (Line 63) takes you from Dresden city centre, for example from Schillerplatz, to the "Pillnitzer Platz" or "Schloss Pillnitz" stop in about 20 minutes, from where the pier is within walking distance. Alternatively, you can take the S-Bahn S1 or S2 from the main station to Niedersedlitz and from there use bus 88 to Kleinzschachwitz, followed by a passenger ferry across the Elbe. For a particularly charming arrival, a steamboat trip with the Sächsische Dampfschifffahrt from the Dresden Terrassenufer directly to the Pillnitz pier is also an option.

Airplane

The nearest airport is Dresden Airport (DRS), located approximately 20 to 30 kilometres from Pillnitz. From the airport, you can reach Pillnitz by taxi in about 20 to 30 minutes, with costs ranging between 34 and 58 euros depending on the provider. For arrival by public transport, first take the S-Bahn S2 to Dresden Hauptbahnhof and then use the bus or steamboat connections mentioned above. Numerous transfer services also offer a comfortable direct trip from the airport to your accommodation in Dresden or to Pillnitz. An overnight stay in one of the charming hotels in Dresden on the day before embarkation is recommended to start your Elbe river cruise in a relaxed manner.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your arrival at the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
