Port information & tips for Lauterbach (Rügen Island)
Lauterbach is the charming maritime gateway to the island of Rügen and enchants visitors as an idyllic district of the princely royal seat of Putbus directly on the Greifswalder Bodden. The atmosphere is characterized by a relaxed proximity to nature and the historic heritage of the region, which is reflected in the white resort architecture and the picturesque harbor basin. Highlights in the immediate vicinity include the legendary island of Vilm, the extensive Schlosspark Putbus, and a ride on the legendary steam train Rasender Roland. The ships dock directly at the Mole Lauterbach, allowing guests to comfortably reach the town center and the waterfront promenade in just a few minutes on foot, while simultaneously benefiting from excellent connections to the picturesque excursion destinations of Germany's largest island.
The port of Lauterbach on Rügen is a picturesque starting point for cruises on the Greifswalder Bodden and beyond, easily accessible for guests from the DACH region thanks to its good road and rail connections. Embarkation takes place directly at the Lauterbacher Mole, which allows for a relaxed arrival due to its manageable size.
Car
Arriving by car takes you via the A20 motorway to the Stralsund exit (24), from where you continue on the B96N towards the island of Rügen across the Rügen Bridge to Bergen. Shortly before Bergen, turn right onto the B196 towards Binz/Göhren and use the exit to Putbus at the end of Bergen, from where Lauterbach is well signposted. A charming alternative is arriving via the Stahlbrode-Glewitz ferry (April to October) and then via Garz and Putbus to Lauterbach. Limited parking is available directly at the harbor, with additional parking spaces about a five-minute walk away.
Train
The Lauterbach Mole train station is ideally located, as it is situated directly at the Wasserferienwelt and thus only a few hundred meters from the harbor. You can reach Lauterbach Mole easily with Deutsche Bahn via Bergen auf Rügen or Stralsund. In addition, the historic narrow-gauge railway "Rasender Roland" stops here, representing a special way of traveling within the island and being integrated into the local transport network.
Airplane
For air travelers, Rostock-Laage Airport (RLG) is the nearest option for commercial flights, approximately 140 kilometers and around 1 hour 40 minutes driving time from Lauterbach. From there, a rental car or private transfer is recommended to reach the port comfortably. Although Rügen has its own small airfield (Güttin), it is primarily used for private flights. For a relaxed start to your cruise, an overnight stay on Rügen the day before can be advantageous for longer journeys.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Please plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time – depending on the cruise line and destination – is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
