Port information & tips for Dover
Dover is England's history-steeped gateway to the world and welcomes travelers with the spectacular panorama of its world-famous white chalk cliffs. Thanks to its centuries-old maritime tradition and the striking cliff coastline, the coastal city exudes an impressive atmosphere that conveys both adventure and elegance. Absolute highlights in the immediate vicinity include the majestic Dover Castle, the largest fortress in the country, as well as the picturesque walking trails of the White Cliffs of Dover. Cruise ships dock at the Dover Cruise Terminal in the Western Docks, usually using the historic Terminal 1 or the modern Terminal 2. From here, guests can comfortably reach the city center in about 20 minutes on foot or within just a few moments thanks to efficient shuttle connections.
The Port of Dover in southeast England is an excellently connected starting point for Northern Europe cruises thanks to its location on the English Channel. Processing takes place in the Western Docks at Terminals 1 and 2, which feature excellent infrastructure and clear signage.
Car & Ferry
Travelers from the DACH region often use the convenient arrival with their own car via the ferry connections from Calais or Dunkirk directly to Dover. After arriving at the ferry terminal, you can reach cruise Terminals 1 and 2 in a few minutes via the A20 or M20; additionally, providers such as Cruise and Passenger Services (CPS) offer secure valet parking directly at the ship.
Train
Dover Priory station is connected to the British high-speed network and enables a fast journey from London St Pancras International in around 66 minutes. From the station, you can comfortably reach the port by taxi in about five minutes or use the special cruise line shuttle buses on selected dates for a direct transfer to the terminal building.
Airplane
Arrival is ideally via the London airports Gatwick (LGW) or Heathrow (LHR), which are located around 130 to 160 kilometers from the port and are regularly served by flights from Frankfurt, Munich, or Zurich. From there, you can reach your ship in about 90 to 150 minutes thanks to organized cruise line transfers or private chauffeur services, whereby arriving the day before with an overnight stay in one of the hotels directly on the harbor front ensures a particularly relaxed start to your vacation.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually about one hour before the planned departure.
The following also applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
