Melk is the picturesque gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage region of the Wachau and is considered one of the cultural highlights on the Austrian Danube. Nestled between gentle vineyards and the glittering riverbank, the town impresses with its Baroque splendor and a welcoming, historical atmosphere. The world-famous Melk Abbey towers majestically above the rooftops and, together with the idyllic old town and the charming Rathausplatz, offers unforgettable insights into regional history. Cruise ships dock directly at the central Danube stations in Melk at the Donaulände. From this pier, travelers can reach the lively center and the imposing abbey comfortably in just a few minutes on foot, allowing for a relaxed exploration of the sights.
Melk is considered the picturesque gateway to the Wachau and, thanks to its location directly on the Danube and its excellent connection to the Austrian trunk road network, is an easily accessible port. The ship docks are located near the center at the so-called Hafenspitz, within direct sight of the imposing Benedictine Melk Abbey.
Car
Via the Westautobahn A1, you can quickly reach the Melk exit from the direction of Vienna or Salzburg and proceed directly to the terminals on the banks of the Danube. Spacious parking areas are available directly at the Hafenspitz on Rollfährestraße, allowing for uncomplicated vehicle parking thanks to modern payment options via the EasyPark app and fair daily rates.
Train
Melk station is located on the traditional Westbahn line and is regularly served by regional express trains and Railjets with a change in nearby St. Pölten. From the station square, you can reach the docks on the riverbank after a relaxed walk of about ten to fifteen minutes through the historic town center or, alternatively, comfortably by one of the waiting taxis.
Airplane
For air passengers from Germany or Switzerland, Vienna International Airport (VIE) serves as a central hub, located around 110 kilometers from Melk. Onward travel to the port takes about 70 minutes via private shuttle services or rental car using the motorway; additionally, the direct train connection from the airport station via St. Pölten represents a reliable and comfortable alternative.
Check-in & Embarkation
