Duart Castle on the Isle of Mull is an impressive destination, usually visited by cruise ships as part of shore excursions. There is no deep-water port for large ships directly at the castle; instead, arrival is via tender boats or, more commonly, via the ferry system to the Isle of Mull, usually arriving in Craignure. Early planning of the journey, especially for the ferry crossing, is recommended.
Airplane & Arrival at the Ferry Terminal
For guests from the DACH region, the journey begins with a flight to Scotland. The nearest international airports are Glasgow (GLA) and Edinburgh (EDI). From Glasgow, you can reach Oban, the main ferry port for Mull, in about 2.5 hours by car or bus. From Edinburgh Airport, it is about a 3-hour drive to Oban. It is recommended to fly to Scotland one day before the planned ferry crossing and schedule an overnight stay in Glasgow or Oban to start the journey relaxed.
Ferry to the Isle of Mull
The main ferry connection to the Isle of Mull is operated by Caledonian MacBrayne (CalMac) and runs from Oban to Craignure. The crossing takes about 50 to 55 minutes and offers picturesque views, often with a first glimpse of Duart Castle on the horizon. Ferry tickets, especially for vehicles, should definitely be booked in advance as capacities are limited. For foot passengers, advance booking is not mandatory, but it is recommended to arrive at the ferry terminal in Oban about 10 minutes before departure.
On the Isle of Mull to Duart Castle
After arriving at the Craignure ferry port on the Isle of Mull, Duart Castle is only a short distance away. The castle is about 2.4 kilometers (1.5 miles) from Craignure and is well signposted. For travelers with a car, both paid and free parking options are available in Craignure near the ferry terminal. From Craignure, Duart Castle is easily accessible by taxi or a local bus, although a direct shuttle bus to the castle is currently no longer in service. For an independent exploration of the island, renting a car is also an option.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually about one hour before the scheduled departure.
The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
