The remote port of Tufi in Papua New Guinea is a unique destination primarily visited as a port of call by expedition and small-ship cruises. Traditional travel by car or train is not possible, as the location is only accessible by plane or sea. Embarkation usually takes place via the cruise ships' tender boats, as there is no traditional terminal.
Airplane (International Arrival)
Arrival from the DACH region is primarily via long-haul flight to Papua New Guinea's international airport, Port Moresby International Airport (POM). Direct flights from Europe are not available, so connecting flights, for example via Asian or Australian metropolises, are necessary. Due to the long travel time and potential flight schedule changes, an overnight stay in Port Moresby is strongly recommended before continuing your flight to Tufi.
Domestic Transfer to Tufi
From Port Moresby International Airport, the journey continues with a domestic transfer to Tufi Airport (TFI), a small airfield. Tropicair offers flights twice weekly (Mondays and Fridays) from Port Moresby to Tufi, with a flight time of approximately 50 to 60 minutes. Occasionally, PNG Air also offers flights on this route. Tufi Airport has an unpaved runway and no air traffic control or refueling facilities.
Local Arrival & Recommendations
After landing at Tufi Airport, the Tufi Resort, which often serves as a starting point for shore excursions and houses the landing point for tender boats, is only a few minutes' walk (about 5 minutes) or a short drive (approx. 3 minutes) away. The resort usually arranges complimentary transfers from the airfield. Since Tufi is not a start or end port for cruises and offers no traditional terminal facilities for embarkation, careful coordination of flights with your expedition ship's arrival times is essential. It is recommended to organize flight bookings and transfers through the cruise line or the Tufi Resort to ensure smooth logistics in this remote region.

Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and bear in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
