Cruise ships dock at the Port Autonome de Cotonou, which is located in the direct vicinity of the city center. From this central mooring point, the cultural treasures and bustling quarters of the city can be easily reached in a few minutes, making Cotonou an ideal starting point for unforgettable experiences.
The Port of Cotonou serves as an important port of call for expedition cruises in West Africa. Although it is primarily a cargo port, its central location near the city and the airport allows for good accessibility for international guests.
Airplane
Cotonou Cadjehoun International Airport (COO), also known as Aéroport International Cardinal Bernardin Gantin, is located only about 5 to 6 kilometers west of Cotonou city center. It is served directly by various European airports, including Paris and Brussels. For travelers from the DACH region, it is recommended to arrive at least one day before the planned embarkation due to the long journey, to allow a time buffer for possible flight delays and entry formalities.
Transfer to the Port and Hotel
From Cotonou Cadjehoun International Airport (COO), you can easily reach the port or your hotel by taxi or a pre-booked private transfer. The travel time is approximately 15 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic. A taxi to the city center costs between 3,000 and 5,000 XOF (approx. 5-8 EUR), while a private transfer is estimated at 5,000 to 10,000 XOF (approx. 8-15 EUR). It is advisable to negotiate the fare before starting the journey, as taxis in Cotonou usually do not use meters. Public bus connections or metros are not available from the airport. Motorcycle taxis (Zémidjans), recognizable by their yellow vests, are a fast but more adventurous option; wearing a helmet is legally required and essential here.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
As Cotonou is not a traditional departure or destination port for cruises with dedicated passenger terminals and cruise ships dock at commercial quays, an overnight stay in one of the centrally located hotels in Cotonou before your cruise is highly recommended. This allows for a relaxed arrival after the long-haul flight and provides time to adjust to the local time zone. Numerous hotels in the city center or near the beach, such as the Benin Marina Hotel, offer comfort and are often just a short drive from the port, ensuring a smooth start to your cruise adventure.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The following also applies during the journey: For shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
