Port information & tips for Santorini

Santorini is arguably the most spectacular island of the Cyclades and welcomes travelers with a globally unique backdrop amidst the deep blue Aegean. The dramatic caldera captivates with brilliant white houses, striking blue-domed churches, and an incomparable Mediterranean flair. Outstanding sights include the charming capital Fira, the picturesque village of Oia, and the prehistoric archaeological site of Akrotiri. Cruise ships drop anchor in the bay, while tender boats bring guests to the Skala Pier (Old Port). From there, the modern cable car or the historic stepped path leads comfortably up to the center of Fira, located about 270 meters higher, providing the perfect starting point for individual explorations of the entire island.

Returning to the ship

Santorini is an extraordinary cruise destination in the Aegean, where ships mostly anchor due to the deep caldera and transport guests by tender boat to the ports of Skala or Athinios. While individual travelers usually arrive at the historic port of Skala directly below the capital Fira, the port of Athinios serves primarily as the arrival point for ferries and organized excursions.

Airplane

Santorini International Airport (JTR) is located about six kilometers east of Fira and is served directly by numerous airports in the DACH region such as Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna, and Zurich during the season. From the terminal, you can reach the capital comfortably in about 15 minutes by taxi or private transfer; additionally, regular KTEL buses run to the central bus station in Fira, from where you have direct access to the cable car towards the port of Skala.

Ferry & Transfer

For guests combining their arrival with a stay in Athens or on other Cycladic islands, the port of Athinios is the central hub. The crossing from the port of Piraeus takes between five and eight hours depending on the type of ship, with Athinios located about eight kilometers south of Fira and offering a direct connection for taxis and hotel shuttles thanks to well-developed serpentine roads. Public parking for rental cars is also available on site if you wish to explore the island individually beforehand.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Due to the unique topography and the tender process, we recommend arriving at least one day before embarkation to avoid possible delays with the cable car or boat transfer. An overnight stay in Fira or picturesque Oia also offers the opportunity to enjoy the famous sunset over the caldera in peace before taking the cable car down to the port of Skala the next day.

Getting around

From the old port of Skala below the cliffs, you can reach the island's capital, Fira, directly via the cable car or the historic steps.

Cable Car

The cable car is the most comfortable connection and whisks guests conveniently to Fira in just three minutes. During the ride, you can also enjoy spectacular views of the cruise ships anchored in the caldera and the Aegean Sea.

On Foot

The ascent via the paved serpentine path comprises around 600 steps and can be completed in about 20 to 30 minutes. Guests who enjoy walking can reach the center of Fira directly this way, where further transport connections are available in the immediate vicinity of the exit.

Taxi and KTEL Buses

Once you have reached the Fira plateau, numerous taxis and KTEL buses are available at the central square, Plateia Theotokopoulou, for onward travel. These vehicles conveniently connect the capital with the picturesque village of Oia or the island's famous beaches.

Highlights & Districts

To fully enjoy the incomparable magic of the Cycladic island, a combination of the picturesque cliff villages directly on the crater wall and the special volcanic beaches of the east coast is recommended.

Fira

The island capital, located directly above the harbor, impresses with a labyrinth of whitewashed alleys and exclusive boutiques, and offers a spectacular view of the ships lying in the caldera thanks to the comfortable cable car connection.

Oia

The world-famous village at the northern tip delights with its iconic blue-domed churches and elegant captain's houses built into the rock, which also provide a perfect setting for unforgettable panoramic photos.

Kamari Beach

The extensive stretch of coastline with its characteristic black volcanic sand is ideal for a refreshing swim break and, thanks to the lively promenade with its traditional taverns, invites you to relax by the sea.

Useful tips

Imerovigli

The idyllic village of Imerovigli, widely known as the "Balcony of the Aegean," is perfectly accessible after a cable car ride from Fira via a picturesque cliff path in about twenty minutes or in a few minutes by taxi. This location offers you the most impressive panoramic views of the entire caldera as well as the striking Skaros Rock and also preserves a pleasant tranquility away from the large crowds of visitors. Thanks to its exclusive location at the highest point of the crater rim, you can enjoy first-class photo opportunities here as well as elegant cafes that are ideal for a relaxed break with a view of the deep blue sea. It is best to visit Imerovigli in the morning and plan generously two hours before the departure of the last tender for the return journey and the necessary time at the cable car to the harbor.

Returning to the ship

The way back to the ship in Santorin usually leads through the charming capital Fira, from where you can conveniently take the cable car or the footpath down to the old port Skala.

Cable Car

The cable car in Fira is the fastest way back to the tender boat pier and also offers a fantastic view of the caldera. Thanks to the regular trips, you will reach the bottom quickly and should only plan for a time buffer for the queue if there are several ships in port.

Taxi

Central taxi stands are located at the main square Plateia Theotokopoulou in Fira as well as at the entrance to the village of Oia and allow for a relaxed journey back to the starting point in the capital. From there, you simply stroll through the pedestrian zone to the cable car station, which is well signposted and easy to find thanks to its central location.

On Foot

The descent via the Karavolades stairs leads you directly from Fira down to the old port over 587 steps and is easy to walk thanks to the continuous paving. This historic path is ideal for active guests and offers safe orientation directly to the quay of the waiting tender boats.
