Returning to the ship

Würzburg, a charming city on the Main, is a major port of call for river cruises in Germany and is easily accessible thanks to its central location. The docking berths for river cruise ships are typically located along the Main within the city area, close to the historic old town.

Car

The university city of Würzburg is excellently connected to the German motorway network. You can easily reach the city area via the A3 (Frankfurt/Nuremberg) and A7 (Kassel/Ulm) motorways, as well as the A81 (Stuttgart). For travel to the cruise terminal, it is recommended to use public parking garages near the city center, as direct long-term parking spaces at the pier are often limited. Good options include the Alter Kranen parking garage or the Marktgarage parking garage, from which the ship moorings are reachable on foot or via a short taxi transfer.

Train

Würzburg Hauptbahnhof is an important hub in German rail traffic and is very well connected to the ICE network. Direct connections exist from Munich, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Hamburg, and Berlin, among others. From the main station, you can generally reach the ship moorings on the Main within a few minutes. A taxi takes about 5-10 minutes; alternatively, you can use public transport (tram or bus), which will bring you directly near the docks.

Airplane

The nearest major international airport is Frankfurt Airport (FRA), located about 120 kilometers from Würzburg. From there, excellent direct ICE connections to Würzburg Hauptbahnhof exist, with a travel time of usually about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Alternatively, Nuremberg Airport (NUE) is reachable at a distance of around 110 kilometers; from there, there are also good train connections to Würzburg with a travel time of about 1.5 hours. For a relaxed embarkation after a long flight, we recommend arriving the day before and staying overnight in one of the centrally located Würzburg hotels.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will typically receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and consider that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is usually about one hour before the planned departure.

The same applies during the trip: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as mooring and departure times may change at short notice.

Highlights & Districts

To make the most of your stay in the wine city of Würzburg, we recommend focusing on the magnificent Baroque buildings and the lively atmosphere directly on the banks of the Main, which can be easily explored on foot thanks to the central pier.

Würzburger Residenz

This UNESCO World Heritage Site impresses with its magnificent architecture and the world's largest continuous ceiling fresco by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and, thanks to its location on the edge of the old town, is an essential destination for culture lovers. The adjacent Court Garden (Hofgarten) also offers an idyllic backdrop for a relaxing stroll amidst artistically landscaped flower beds and sculptures.

Alte Mainbrücke & Altstadt

The historic stone bridge is the perfect place for a traditional "Brückenschoppen" with a view of the vineyards and ideally combines the maritime flair of the river with the charm of the winding alleys around the Kiliansdom. In the surrounding quarters, cozy wine taverns and regional boutiques also invite you to a discovery tour, which is particularly relaxed thanks to the short distances from the ship.

Festung Marienberg

The monumental fortress complex towers majestically over the city and offers visitors a spectacular panoramic view over the Main Valley, while the extensive outdoor grounds are perfect for a tour of discovery steeped in history. The fortress is easily accessible thanks to well-signposted paths or a short drive and at the same time represents an impressive contrast to the Baroque splendor of the city center.

Useful tips

Würzburg Residence & Court Garden

The magnificent Würzburg Residence, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located only about fifteen minutes on foot from the central docking points on the Main and impresses with the world's largest contiguous ceiling fresco by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. This cultural highlight also offers you the opportunity to stroll beautifully in the adjacent Court Garden among artistic sculptures and well-tended flower beds. Thanks to its central location, the complex is ideally suited for a relaxed tour and features an inviting palace café for a high-quality culinary break. It is best to visit the Residence directly at opening time in the morning to admire the magnificent halls in peace and stroll comfortably back across the Alte Mainbrücke to the ship around midday.

Returning to the ship

The return journey to the berths at Mainkai or at the Löwenbrücke is extremely convenient thanks to the city's central location and the short distances within the Altstadt.

On Foot

From the Residenz or the Dom, simply stroll through the pedestrian zone directly back towards the Main. The striking silhouette of the Festung Marienberg serves as a helpful landmark and leads you safely to the moorings at Alter Kranen.
