Port information & tips for Visby (Gotland)
Visby is the capital of the Swedish island of Gotland and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its medieval charm. The "City of Roses and Ruins" impresses with its cobblestone streets, ivy-covered houses, and a magical Baltic Sea atmosphere. Highlights include the mighty Visby City Wall, the idyllic Botanical Garden, and the historic St. Mary’s Cathedral. Cruise ships dock at the modern Visby Cruise Berth, located south of the center, which offers excellent access to the historic old town via convenient shuttle buses or a scenic 20-minute walk along the coastline.
Visby on the island of Gotland is easily accessible thanks to the central location of the cruise pier at the southern end of the harbor, combining modern logistics directly with the charm of the historic Hanseatic city. The cruise terminal is located in the immediate vicinity of the ferry terminal, allowing for a short path to the medieval city center and the main transport hubs.
Plane
Visby Airport (VBY) is located only about 4 kilometers north of the harbor and is typically reached from the DACH region via the hubs of Stockholm Arlanda (ARN) or Bromma (BMA). From there, you can reach the terminal comfortably in about 10 minutes by taxi or, during the summer months, with public transport shuttle buses that offer a direct connection to the city center and the harbor.
Ferry & Car
When arriving with your own car, routes from Germany, Austria, or Switzerland usually lead via the E4 highway to Nynäshamn or the E22 to Oskarshamn. From these ports, the modern high-speed ferries of Destination Gotland cross to Visby in about three hours, with sufficient long-term parking spaces for cruise guests available directly at the harbor area as well as near the terminal.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to Gotland's special location in the Baltic Sea and the ferry schedules, we recommend arriving the day before to explore the UNESCO World Heritage city at your leisure. Many charming hotels are located directly within the historic city walls and are thus only a short walk or a five-minute taxi ride from the cruise terminal, allowing for a particularly comfortable start to your journey.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your arrival at the harbor and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is usually about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as mooring and departure times may change at short notice.
