Airplane
Travel from the DACH region is primarily by plane to the nearby Santa Maria Airport (SMA). Direct flights to the Azores often lead first to Ponta Delgada (São Miguel), from where convenient connecting flights to Santa Maria exist. Alternatively, TAP Air Portugal offers connections via Lisbon to Santa Maria, often with a stopover on São Miguel. SMA airport is located only about 3 to 4 kilometers from the port of Vila do Porto.
Transfer & Shuttle
From Santa Maria Airport (SMA), you can reach the port of Vila do Porto quickly. Taxis are available and will take you to the terminal in about four minutes, with costs ranging from approximately 4 to 10 euros. A cost-effective alternative is provided by the hourly public buses (Monday to Friday from 7:30 AM to 8:30 PM, Saturdays until 2:00 PM), which run from the ferry pier to the airport, passing through the village. Car rentals from providers such as Ilha Verde and Rent-a-Car Mariense are also available at the terminal.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the insular location and the usually required long-haul flights, as well as possible connecting flights, it is recommended to arrive in Santa Maria one day before the planned embarkation. This allows for a relaxed start to your cruise, as you can enjoy the journey without time pressure and explore the charming surroundings of Vila do Porto if you wish. Several hotels in and around Vila do Porto offer comfortable overnight accommodations.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as mooring and departure times may change at short notice.
