Port information & tips for Portimão
Portimão is the maritime gateway to the western Algarve and enchants as one of Portugal's most charming port cities. Situated on the banks of the River Arade, the city combines traditional fishing flair with a modern lifestyle and, thanks to its picturesque cliffs and golden-yellow sandy beaches, offers a breathtaking backdrop for every visitor. Nearby, the world-famous Praia da Rocha beach, the historic Fortaleza de Santa Catarina, and the award-winning Museu de Portimão invite you to make unforgettable discoveries. Cruise ships dock at the modern Terminal de Cruzeiros de Portimão, which is located about two kilometers from the lively city center and also provides an ideal connection for explorations along the scenic riverside promenade.
Portimão is the most significant cruise port in the Algarve and welcomes its guests directly on the banks of the Rio Arade, in the immediate vicinity of the well-known Praia da Rocha beach. The manageable terminal structure at the Cais de Cruzeiros ensures short distances and a pleasantly uncomplicated start to your journey.
Airplane
Faro Airport (FAO) is located approximately 70 kilometers east of Portimão and is served directly by numerous airports in the DACH region. The journey to the cruise terminal takes around 50 to 60 minutes via the A22 motorway and can be easily arranged by taxi, pre-booked shuttle, or rental car. Alternatively, Lisbon Airport (LIS) offers an option for guests wishing to combine a longer journey through Portugal with a private transfer or rental car.
Train
Portimão station is well-connected via the Linha do Algarve regional railway and offers direct connections to the Alfa Pendular and Intercidades long-distance trains from Lisbon via a change at the Tunes hub. From the station, you can reach the terminal in about ten minutes by taxi or a local driving service, allowing for a relaxed and scenic arrival.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to its picturesque location on the rocky Algarve coast, arriving a day early is recommended to enjoy the special atmosphere at Praia da Rocha and Portuguese hospitality. Many first-class hotels are located in the immediate vicinity of the harbor and provide ideal conditions for a stress-free embarkation on the morning of departure thanks to short transfer distances.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents will generally provide you with a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and consider that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
