Port information & tips for Pocinho

Pocinho is the picturesque gateway to the wild and romantic eastern Douro Valley and marks one of the most fascinating stops on a river cruise through the heart of Portugal. The region impresses with its untouched nature as well as steep, terraced vineyards, and thanks to its quiet location, offers an authentic experience in the middle of a cultural landscape that is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Cultural highlights in the immediate vicinity include the architecturally impressive Museu do Côa as well as the Archaeological Park with its world-famous prehistoric rock engravings. Furthermore, the imposing Barragem do Pocinho dam directly on the river course is a fascinating sight. Cruise ships dock directly at the Cais de Pocinho, from which the historic railway station is easily accessible on foot, while comfortable transfer routes provide access to the archaeological treasures of the nearby surroundings.

Pocinho is an idyllic anchor point for river cruises in the heart of the Douro Valley and offers charming accessibility thanks to its connection to the Douro railway line. Embarkation usually takes place at a well-arranged quay directly on the river.

Car

Arrival by car is via Portugal's national road network, which connects well with the region around Pocinho. From Porto, the route leads, partly via the A4 motorway, to the port in about 2 hours and 10 minutes. Since Pocinho is a smaller river port, special Park & Cruise offers are rare; travelers should inquire about local parking options near the pier.

Train

Pocinho has a railway station, the "Estação Ferroviária do Pocinho," which forms the eastern terminus of the picturesque Linha do Douro. From Porto Campanhã, there are train connections to Pocinho, which take around 4 hours and 47 minutes with transfers. From the station to the river terminal, it is only a short transfer, which is already included in many cruises.

Airplane

The nearest international airport is Porto Airport (OPO), also known as Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport. It is located about 167 to 179 kilometers from Pocinho, and the driving time is around 2 hours and 10 minutes. For a relaxed arrival from the DACH region, a flight to Porto with an overnight stay in a hotel is recommended, followed by a private transfer or onward travel by train the next day. Direct private transfers from Porto Airport to Pocinho are a comfortable transfer option.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that with your travel documents, you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your arrival at the port accordingly and consider that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The following also applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
