Port information & tips for Schoonhoven
Schoonhoven, the charming "Silver City" on the Lek, is a shining jewel of Dutch river cruising. The town impresses with its picturesque historic center, where the art of silver and goldsmithing has been passionately cultivated for centuries. Visitors can explore the fascinating Nederlands Zilvermuseum, admire the impressive Bartholomeüskerk, and also visit the monumental city gate Veerpoort. The river cruise ships dock directly at the central pier "Buiten de Veerpoort," from where travelers are right in the heart of the old town after just a few steps. Thanks to this prime location, the cobblestone streets, fine studios, and the maritime flair of the city can be discovered completely relaxed and comfortably on foot.
Schoonhoven, the charming Silver City on the Lek, primarily serves as a mooring point for river cruises and is easily accessible from the DACH region thanks to its central location in the Netherlands. There is no classic cruise terminal in Schoonhoven; ships usually dock directly at the city quay.
Car
Schoonhoven is accessible via well-maintained roads, with the N210 leading directly through the city and providing connections to the Dutch motorway network, for example via the A2 or A12. For arrival, it is recommended to use the public parking facilities in and around the city center; these are often designed for short-term parking, however, there are also options for longer parking in the surrounding area, which should be researched in advance.
Train
The nearest major railway station is Gouda, an important railway junction with good connections from within the Netherlands and international links, for example via Amsterdam Centraal or Utrecht Centraal. From Gouda, you can reach Schoonhoven easily by bus (line 195) in about 30 to 40 minutes. The bus stops in Schoonhoven are centrally located and are only a short walk from the ship moorings.
Airplane
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) is the nearest international airport and is located about 60 kilometers from Schoonhoven. From Schiphol, you can quickly reach Gouda central station by direct train. Another option is Rotterdam The Hague Airport (RTM), which is about 40 kilometers away and primarily offers regional flights as well as some European destinations; from there, onward travel to Schoonhoven is also possible by bus and train. Taxi transfers are available from both airports and take between 45 and 75 minutes depending on traffic.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always observe the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
