Port information & tips for Villefranche (Nice)

Villefranche-sur-Mer is considered one of the most picturesque anchorages on the Côte d’Azur and is the charming gateway to the cosmopolitan city of Nice. The deep blue bay impresses with its Mediterranean flair and offers a spectacular backdrop with pastel-colored house facades and crystal-clear water. Right on site, the historic Citadelle Saint-Elme, the mysterious Rue Obscure, and the artistically designed Chapelle Saint-Pierre invite exploration. As cruise ships lie at anchor in the protected bay, tender boats bring guests directly to the Gare Maritime at the Quai de l'Amiral Courbet. From this central point in the heart of the old town, travelers can easily reach the winding alleys as well as the nearby train station for a short trip to Nice within just a few minutes' walk.

The picturesque port of Villefranche-sur-Mer is considered one of the most charming gateways to the Côte d’Azur and, due to its enormous depth, is primarily used as an anchorage by larger cruise ships. Arrival usually takes place via nearby Nice, with guests arriving by tender boat directly in the historical town center at Quai Amiral Courbet.

Airplane

Nice Côte d’Azur Airport (NCE) is located only 15 kilometers away and offers excellent direct connections from cities such as Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna, and Zurich. Thanks to the short distance, you can reach the port comfortably in about 30 minutes by taxi or use the efficient combination of tram line 2 to Nice and the subsequent TER regional train.

Train

The Gare de Villefranche-sur-Mer station is only about a ten-minute walk from the cruise terminal and provides a direct connection to the Nice-Ville main rail hub. From there, SNCF regional trains operate at high frequencies, bringing travelers to their destination in less than 15 minutes, which makes traveling from the DACH region via TGV or ICE particularly comfortable.

Car & Parking

The port is easily accessible via the A8 motorway (La Provençale) and exit 54 (Nice-Est); additionally, the drive along the coastal road offers initial impressive views of the bay. For cruise guests, secure parking options such as the Wilson parking garage or the Les Marinières parking lot are available in the immediate vicinity of the port. Furthermore, a pre-cruise overnight stay in one of the hotels directly in Villefranche or Nice is recommended for a relaxed start.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always observe the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times may change at short notice.
