Port information & tips for Brest
Brest is located on the spectacular west coast of Brittany and stands out as a major port city due to its maritime history and its location in one of the world's most beautiful natural bays. The city welcomes visitors with a harmonious blend of modern architecture and historic landmarks, where the salty sea air and expansive views of the Atlantic convey an authentic Breton flair. Highlights include the impressive Océanopolis aquarium, the medieval fortress Château de Brest, and the innovative cable car to the Ateliers des Capucins. Cruise ships dock at the central Quai de l’Aisne in the Port de Commerce, from where the bustling Rue de Siam and the city center are easily accessible thanks to convenient shuttle connections or a short walk.
The Port of Brest is easily accessible from the DACH region thanks to its central location and efficient transport links. Cruise ships dock at the Port de Commerce, which provides temporary infrastructure for passengers, as there is no permanent cruise terminal. Since the port also serves as a commercial port, it is not directly accessible on foot, but free shuttle buses provided by the cruise lines ensure a convenient transfer to the city center.
Car
Arriving in Brest by car is comfortable thanks to the well-developed French road network. Parking spaces for private vehicles are available within the port area. For long-term parking, it is recommended to research local providers in advance or book a hotel with a park-and-cruise package near the port to enjoy a relaxed start to your cruise.
Train
The train station Gare de Brest is centrally located and an important arrival point for rail travelers. From there, you can easily reach the cruise terminal, which is about 2 kilometers away. A direct bus connection with line 22 takes you to the Tritschler stop near the port in only about 5 minutes. Alternatively, a taxi ride is available, taking about 3 minutes and costing around 6 to 8 euros to reach your destination.
Airplane
The nearest airport is Brest Bretagne Airport (BES), located around 13 kilometers from the port. Several options are available for the transfer: The airport shuttle bus (line 20 from Bibus) connects the airport with Porte de Gouesnou, from where you can take the tram (line A) to reach the city center and continue to the port. A single ticket costs 1.70 euros and is valid for one hour throughout the entire Bibus network. Alternatively, taxis or private transfers are available, taking about 11 to 14 minutes directly to the port or your hotel. From 2026, bus line 16 will also directly connect the airport with the Brest train station, further simplifying the journey.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Please plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the cruise: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
