Nukupule Island is a hidden gem within the Ha'apai Islands of Tonga, embodying the untouched beauty of the South Seas in its purest form. As the island does not have a deep-water port, guests reach the shore by tender boat via the Taufa’ahau Wharf in Pangai. Nukupule Island in Haʻapai, Tonga, is a remote, uninhabited coral atoll and not a traditional cruise port with terminal infrastructure. Arrival for cruise guests from the DACH region primarily takes place as part of a Fly & Cruise journey, with Nukupule being visited as a tender port. Direct travel to the small island is not possible; guests are brought ashore via tender boat from larger cruise ships anchored off the coast.
Airplane
Travel from the DACH region usually involves international flights to Fuaʻamotu International Airport (TBU) on Tongatapu, the main island of Tonga. From there, the journey continues with a domestic flight to Salote Pilolevu Airport (HPA) on Lifuka Island in the Haʻapai group. The flight time between Tongatapu and Haʻapai is approximately 40 to 55 minutes and is operated several times daily by Lulutai Airlines. Since Nukupule Island itself does not have an airfield, this is the closest arrival point for the Haʻapai region.
Domestic Transfer & Ferry
From Salote Pilolevu Airport (HPA) on Lifuka Island, located about 3 km north of the main town of Pangai, transfers to your accommodation can be arranged, often by taxi or resort shuttle. As Nukupule Island is uninhabited and has no roads or vehicles, further transfer is exclusively by boat. Private boat charters and organized day trips are available from Pangai, taking you to Nukupule Island in 1 to 2 hours. Ferries also operate between the island groups of Tonga, although the journey from Nukuʻalofa (Tongatapu) to Haʻapai can take around 13-14 hours and is therefore less suitable for time-critical cruise arrivals.
Pre-Cruise Stay
Due to the long international flights and the required domestic connection to Haʻapai, a pre-cruise stay of at least one night in Nukuʻalofa on Tongatapu is recommended to start the cruise relaxed and to buffer against potential flight delays of the small domestic flights. Some accommodations on Lifuka Island also offer transfers from Salote Pilolevu Airport, which you should arrange when booking. Direct check-in or embarkation on the day of arrival at Nukupule Island is not possible, as it is strictly a port of call for tender excursions and no traditional port infrastructure exists.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and consider that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
