Returning to the ship

Roderick Bay, nestled in the picturesque Nggela Islands of the Solomon Islands, is a remote paradise that primarily serves as a port of call for expedition cruises. A classic cruise terminal with extensive infrastructure, as known from larger ports, does not exist here. Travel for guests from the DACH region therefore usually leads via Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands and its international hub.

Airplane

Honiara International Airport (HIR), formerly Henderson Field, is the main gateway to the Solomon Islands and is located about 11 kilometers east of Honiara city center. Direct flights from the DACH region are not available, but you can reach Honiara easily with connecting flights, often via major hubs such as Brisbane (Australia), Nadi (Fiji), or Port Moresby (Papua New Guinea). Airlines such as Qantas, Fiji Airways, Air Niugini, and Solomon Airlines offer connections to Honiara.

Transfer to Roderick Bay and the Ship

From Honiara, Roderick Bay is only accessible by boat, which means a journey of approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes through the Sandfly Passage. For most cruise guests visiting Roderick Bay as part of an expedition trip, access is provided from the ship via Zodiac or tender boat. From Honiara Airport (HIR) to the center of Honiara, where the Point Cruz Wharf is located—the main pier for cruise ships in Honiara—the transfer by taxi takes 20 to 35 minutes and costs about 200-400 SBD (approx. 25-50 USD). It is recommended to arrange transfers in advance through the cruise line or local providers, as taxis are limited and no public buses run directly from the airport.

Pre-Cruise Hotel in Honiara

Due to the long journey and the necessary connecting transfers, it is advisable to spend at least one night in Honiara before the scheduled embarkation. This allows for a relaxed acclimatization and sufficient buffer for possible flight delays. In Honiara, you will find various hotels that also offer airport transfers, including the Heritage Park Hotel, the Coral Sea Resort & Casino, the Solomon Kitano Mendana Hotel, and the King Solomon Hotel. Many of these accommodations are conveniently located near the port and offer a pleasant start to your South Sea adventure.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The following also applies during the trip: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always observe the current announcements and the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
