From this landing point, the famous path "Hill of Difficulty" leads directly up to the charming village of Adamstown, which can be ideally explored on foot thanks to its compact size.
Bounty Bay on the Pitcairn Islands is a cruise port that requires careful planning due to its extremely remote location and the lack of direct transport infrastructure. Here, cruise ships anchor off the bay, and guests reach the shore exclusively by longboat. There is no classic terminal with numerous facilities; instead, a unique landing point at the foot of the "Hill of Difficulty" awaits you.
Airplane
The Pitcairn Islands do not have their own airport; arrival is exclusively by sea. For travelers from the DACH region, the journey first leads via international flights to a major hub such as Tahiti (PPT) in French Polynesia. From there, Air Tahiti offers two weekly connections to Mangareva Airport (GMR) in the Gambier Islands, which is the nearest airport at approximately 530 kilometers away. These flights are strategically timed to coincide with the departure times of the supply ship.
Ship Transfer to Bounty Bay
The onward journey from Mangareva to Bounty Bay takes place on the MV Silver Supporter, the official passenger and supply ship of the Pitcairn Islands. This sea voyage takes approximately 32 to 36 hours. Once at Bounty Bay, the ship anchors, and embarkation to the shore is carried out using the robust longboats of the islanders. From the landing stage, the "Hill of Difficulty" leads up to the only settlement, Adamstown, where friendly locals often offer transport by quad bike.
Arrival the Day Before & Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long and multi-stage journey as well as the fixed schedules of the MV Silver Supporter, it is strongly recommended to arrive in Mangareva at least one day before the ship's scheduled departure. An overnight stay in a hotel on Tahiti and, if necessary, also on Mangareva allows for a relaxed start and provides buffer times in the event of unforeseen travel delays. This ensures smooth coordination with the weekly flight and ship connections.
