Kapingamarangi is an untouched paradise in the Pacific and, as the southernmost atoll of Micronesia, marks an exclusive highlight of every expedition cruise. Arrival is comfortable via tender boat directly at the central Touhou landing pier, as the ships anchor safely in the protected lagoon. Thanks to this direct connection, travelers can easily reach the village center and all cultural sites within a few minutes' walk and immediately immerse themselves in the authentic, decelerated island life.
Kapingamarangi is not a conventional cruise port, but an extremely remote atoll in Micronesia that has no formal terminal infrastructure and is exclusively visited by expedition cruises or chartered vessels. Arrival therefore requires careful and long-term planning, as the island has no tourist facilities such as hotels, restaurants, or shops.
Airplane
Travel from the DACH region is primarily by long-haul flight to Pohnpei International Airport (PNI) in Micronesia, the nearest major transport hub. Connections usually lead through major hubs such as Guam or Honolulu, from where United Airlines serves Pohnpei with the so-called "Island Hopper" flights. The long flight times require early booking and generous time planning to ensure a relaxed start to the journey.
Onward journey to Kapingamarangi
From Pohnpei, the onward journey to Kapingamarangi is challenging. There are no regular scheduled flights, but it is possible to book a small plane charter from Pohnpei to Kapingamarangi, with the flight taking about 1.5 to 2 hours. Alternatively, you can reach the island by boat, which takes a travel time of about 8 to 12 hours and can be arranged by local providers from Pohnpei. However, the frequency of these boat connections is very low, often only a few times a year.
Pre-stay in Pohnpei
Due to the extreme remoteness of Kapingamarangi and the minimal infrastructure on site, a pre-stay in Pohnpei is strongly recommended. This not only allows you a relaxed arrival after the long flights but also serves as an important logistical buffer before the onward journey to the atoll. Pohnpei offers the necessary infrastructure with accommodations and the opportunity to make final travel preparations, as Kapingamarangi itself offers no tourist services and travelers must bring all essential goods.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
Also during the trip: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always observe the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
