Tahanea is a pristine natural paradise in the Tuamotu Archipelago of French Polynesia, promising an exclusive experience far from civilization. As there is no permanent infrastructure, cruise ships anchor safely in Tahanea's protected lagoon. From there, tender boats take guests directly to the powdery white beaches, which serve as an ideal starting point for exploring the wild natural surroundings.
French Polynesia and especially the Tahanea Atoll, an uninhabited nature reserve, are primarily visited as part of cruises that mostly start in Papeete on Tahiti. For guests from the DACH region, the journey therefore begins at the international airport of Tahiti, from where a comfortable onward journey to the centrally located cruise terminal takes place. Due to the long flight duration, arrival at least one day before embarkation is recommended to start your South Sea adventure relaxed.
Airplane
Tahiti-Faa'a International Airport (PPT) is the only international airport in French Polynesia and thus your primary arrival point. It is located only about 5 to 8 kilometers southwest of the city center of Papeete and the cruise port. Direct flights from Europe are usually available with layovers, for example via Los Angeles.
Transfer & Shuttle
From PPT airport, you can reach the Papeete cruise port easily. Taxis are available, and a prior price agreement in CFP francs is recommended as taximeters are not always used and prices can be higher at night. For a smooth start, private or shared transfer services are also available, which will bring you comfortably to your hotel or directly to the ship and often welcome international guests with a traditional lei. Many cruise lines already include these transfers.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
For a relaxed acclimatization before your cruise, an overnight stay in one of the diverse hotels in Papeete or the surrounding area is highly recommended. You will find numerous options directly in the city center near the port, such as the Hotel Tahiti Nui or the Boutique Hotel Kon Tiki Tahiti. Alternatively, luxury resorts along the west coast of Tahiti, including the InterContinental Resort Tahiti or the Hilton Tahiti, offer a relaxing atmosphere with impressive views. These hotels are also excellently connected to the port thanks to good transfer options and allow for a stress-free start to your cruise.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually about one hour before the planned departure.
Also during the voyage: For shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
