Port information & tips for Chapera Island
Chapera Island is an untouched jewel in Panama's Las Perlas Archipelago and impresses with its exclusive location in the Pacific Ocean. The atmosphere is absolutely heavenly thanks to the secluded, white sandy beaches and crystal-clear, turquoise water, inviting you to complete relaxation in pristine nature. Special highlights include the species-rich coral reefs for snorkeling, the picturesque Playa Chapera beach, and the famous filming locations of the TV series "Survivor". Since there is no commercial pier, cruise ships anchor in the protected bay and guests reach the shore comfortably by tender boat. This natural access allows a direct path into the heart of the island, which also serves as an idyllic retreat far away from the hustle and bustle of the capital, Panama City.
Chapera Island, part of Panama's picturesque Pearl Islands, is an idyllic cruise port primarily reached via Panama City. From the mainland, the island is only accessible by boat or small aircraft, making the journey a seamless experience across air and sea.
Airplane
Your international arrival from the DACH region is via Tocumen International Airport (PTY) in Panama City, which is excellently connected as Panama's most important international airport. For onward travel to the Pearl Islands, Albrook "Marcos A. Gelabert" International Airport (PAC) is available, from which domestic flights depart to the nearby island of Contadora (COZ). These flights take only about 15 to 30 minutes. From Tocumen International Airport (PTY), you can reach the ferry terminal in Panama City comfortably by taxi or Uber in about 30 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic.
Transfer to the Island
The most popular and relaxed way to reach Chapera Island is by ferry from Panama City. Ferries to the Pearl Islands depart from the Flamenco Marina on the Amador Causeway. Companies such as Sea Las Perlas offer daily connections, with the crossing to Contadora Island—near which Chapera is located—taking approximately 90 minutes to 2 hours. Free parking is available at the Fuerte Amador Resort & Marina. Arrival at the ferry terminal 30 to 45 minutes before departure is recommended. From Contadora, the further transfer to Chapera usually takes place by local boat or water taxi. Please note that access to Chapera Island is often not barrier-free and may require a transfer to a smaller boat. Alternatively, you can take a short flight from Panama City (Albrook Airport, PAC) to Contadora Island (COZ) and organize the local transfer from there.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long-haul flights from the DACH region and the necessary onward travel to Chapera Island, booking a pre-cruise hotel in Panama City is highly recommended. This allows you a relaxed start to your cruise, compensates for possible flight delays, and offers you the opportunity to explore Panama's vibrant capital before your embarkation. Many hotels in Panama City are well connected to the ferry terminals and airports, which further simplifies your travel planning.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always observe the current announcements and notices on board, as berthing and departure times may change at short notice.
