Port information & tips for Bocas del Toro

Bocas del Toro is a fascinating archipelago on Panama's Caribbean coast and is considered one of the most biodiverse natural paradises in Central America. The region's relaxed atmosphere impresses with a blend of Caribbean joie de vivre, dense mangrove forests, and crystal-clear, turquoise water. Nearby highlights include the idyllic Starfish Beach on Isla Colón, the species-rich Bastimentos National Park, and charming Bocas Town with its iconic colorful wooden houses. Since cruise ships usually anchor in the protected bay, guests can easily reach the center via tender boat at the central Muelle Municipal. This landing point is located directly in the lively town center, from where the island world and local delicacies can be explored effortlessly thanks to short distances and direct water taxi connections.

Bocas del Toro on Isla Colón is a picturesque port of call in the Caribbean Panama, primarily visited by smaller cruise ships and expedition yachts. Since ships anchor offshore and passengers are brought ashore by tender boats, there are no traditional terminal buildings. Arrival is primarily via air travel, often with a recommended overnight stay to optimally enjoy the relaxed island atmosphere.

Airplane

For guests from the DACH region, the journey typically begins with a long-haul flight to Tocumen International Airport (PTY) in Panama City, which offers direct connections from European metropolises thanks to airlines such as Air France and KLM. From there, a transfer to the national Albrook International Airport (PAC) in Panama City is required, which takes about 30 to 40 minutes by taxi or Uber. From PAC, Air Panama and FlyTrip offer regular domestic flights of about 50 minutes in duration to Bocas del Toro "Isla Colón" International Airport (BOC). BOC airport is extremely conveniently located, only about 1 to 1.5 kilometers northwest of Bocas Town on the main island of Colón, making most accommodations and the tender pier easily reachable on foot in 5 to 15 minutes or via a short taxi transfer.

Transfer & Onward Travel Locally

After arriving at Bocas del Toro "Isla Colón" International Airport (BOC), you can easily reach Bocas Town, the central hub on Isla Colón, with one of the numerous yellow pickup taxis. These local taxis allow for quick and uncomplicated trips to your hotel or the main pier where the cruise ships' tender boats land. Although it is also possible to reach Bocas Town from the mainland (e.g., from Almirante) by water taxi (approx. 30 minutes), air travel is the most time-saving and comfortable option for international guests.

Pre-Arrival Hotel Recommended

Due to the long international flight to Panama City and the necessary transfer to the national airport PAC followed by a domestic flight to Bocas del Toro, an overnight stay in Panama City is strongly recommended. This creates a valuable buffer for possible flight delays and allows for a relaxed onward journey to the island archipelago. An overnight stay in charming Bocas Town directly after arrival is also beneficial to adjust to the local time and extensively enjoy the unique Caribbean island atmosphere before the start of your cruise experience or further activities.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The following also applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as berthing and departure times can change at short notice.
