Port information & tips for Puerto Chiapas

Puerto Chiapas is the fascinating gateway to the mystical world of the Maya on Mexico's southern Pacific coast, welcoming travelers with an authentic blend of tropical nature and rich cultural heritage. The region is characterized by lush coffee plantations, dense jungle, and a relaxed atmosphere, often accompanied by traditional marimba music. Cultural highlights nearby include the ancient archaeological site of Izapa with its mysterious stelae, as well as the famous chocolate town of Tuxtla Chico. Cruise ships dock directly at the modern Terminal de Cruceros de Puerto Chiapas, which impresses with its striking pyramid roof and an integrated handicraft market. The center of Tapachula, about 30 kilometers away, is easily accessible in around 40 minutes thanks to regular shuttle buses and taxis.

Puerto Chiapas on Mexico's Pacific coast welcomes cruise guests in a modern terminal area specifically designed for passengers. Although the port itself is situated in a rather industrial environment and is not directly connected to a city within walking distance, good transfer options and the proximity to the local airport ensure a comfortable arrival. The terminal itself is invitingly designed and offers various amenities.

Airplane

Arrival from the DACH region typically involves a long-haul flight to Mexico. The nearest international airport is Tapachula International Airport (TAP), located only about 10 to 11 kilometers from the Puerto Chiapas cruise port. From there, transfer times to the terminal are pleasantly short, allowing for an enjoyable continuation of the journey.

Transfer & Shuttle

From Tapachula International Airport (TAP), you can easily reach the cruise terminal by taxi. Taxis are available and provide a direct and quick transfer that takes only about 10 minutes. Should you wish to explore Tapachula, the nearest larger city, in advance, shuttle services also run from the cruise terminal to Tapachula city center. The journey takes around 30 to 40 minutes and costs approximately 10 USD for a round trip. Official taxis and tours are available directly at the terminal to organize trips to destinations outside the port.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Due to the long flight time from Germany, Austria, or Switzerland, an overnight stay in a pre-cruise hotel in Tapachula is strongly recommended. This allows for a relaxed acclimatization to the time difference and ensures a stress-free start to your cruise on embarkation day. Tapachula is located about 18 to 30 kilometers from the port and offers a good selection of accommodation options.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your arrival at the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually about one hour before the scheduled departure.

The following also applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
