Port information & tips for Guaymas

Guaymas is a fascinating destination on Mexico's Pacific coast and is considered the maritime gateway to the Gulf of California in the state of Sonora. The historic port city impresses with its authentic Mexican atmosphere and is picturesquely situated between rugged desert mountains and the azure sea. Cultural highlights include the Plaza de los Tres Presidentes with its imposing monuments and the magnificent Parroquia de San Fernando, while the nearby Malecón Turístico invites you to stroll with panoramic views. Cruise ships dock at the Terminal de Cruceros in the port of Guaymas, from where the lively city center is easily reachable in just a few minutes on foot or via short transfers thanks to its central location.

Guaymas, located on the picturesque Sea of Cortez, is an increasingly popular cruise destination that travelers from the DACH region primarily reach by plane followed by transfers. Due to the long journey, an overnight stay in advance is recommended to start your cruise experience relaxed. The ship usually docks at the commercial pier near the city center, with shuttles or taxis being advisable for transfers to the tourist areas.

Airplane

The nearest major airport for arrival is Hermosillo International Airport (HMO), also known as General Ignacio L. Pesqueira International Airport, which is located approximately 131 to 145 kilometers from Guaymas and has direct flight connections from the USA. Although Guaymas has its own airport (General José María Yáñez International Airport, GYM), it is smaller and does not offer direct international connections.

Transfer & Shuttle

From Hermosillo Airport (HMO), you can easily reach Guaymas by taxi, rideshare services, or private transfers, which takes a travel time of about 1 hour and 40 minutes to 1 hour and 43 minutes. A cost-effective alternative is the bus: Tufesa Mexico operates regular bus connections from Hermosillo to Guaymas with a travel time of approximately 1 hour and 51 minutes to 2 hours and 2 minutes, although a taxi from the airport to the bus station in Hermosillo may be required.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

For a relaxed start to your cruise, an overnight stay in Guaymas or in the nearby resort of San Carlos, about 20 kilometers northwest of the port, is highly recommended. Numerous hotels such as the Holiday Inn Express Guaymas, City Express by Marriott Guaymas, or the Hotel Playa de Cortes offer comfortable accommodations. Many of these hotels also have free parking if you are using a rental car. This allows you to enjoy the local culture and the beauty of the Sea of Cortez even before embarkation.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The following also applies during the trip: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
