There are direct flight connections from European cities such as Amsterdam, Paris, or Madrid. The flight time from Europe is usually over 10 hours, which is why an overnight stay on the mainland before the onward flight to the Galápagos Islands is strongly recommended.
Arrival in the Galápagos Islands
The onward flight to the Galápagos Islands takes place from Quito or Guayaquil. The two main airports in the archipelago are Seymour Airport (GPS) on Baltra and San Cristóbal Airport (SCY). The flight time from the Ecuadorian mainland is about 2.5 hours. Before departing for the Galápagos Islands, travelers must apply for a transit control card and pay the national park fee. In addition, luggage is strictly inspected to prevent the introduction of foreign species. After arriving on Baltra, a bus takes passengers to the Itabaca Channel, which is crossed by a short ferry ride, followed by a transfer to Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz. From San Cristóbal Airport, you can easily reach Puerto Baquerizo Moreno in about 5 to 10 minutes by taxi. The tour guide or the ship's crew awaits passengers directly in the arrival area of the Galápagos airports to organize the further transfer to the embarkation point.
Pre-Cruise Hotel for a Relaxed Arrival
Due to the long international flights and the mostly morning domestic flights to the Galápagos Islands, a pre-cruise overnight stay on the Ecuadorian mainland, for example in Quito or Guayaquil, is highly recommended. Many cruise lines and tour operators already include such an overnight stay in their Fly & Cruise packages to ensure a relaxed arrival and provide sufficient time for the required entry formalities for the national park. Alternatively, an overnight stay on one of the main islands like Santa Cruz or San Cristóbal before the actual start of the cruise can also be useful to adjust to the local time zone and explore the surroundings.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
