Baltra is the fascinating gateway to the Galapagos Archipelago and, as an ecological hub, offers the perfect introduction to Ecuador's protected natural paradise. The island impresses with its striking volcanic landscape and a calm, maritime atmosphere that immediately draws travelers into the spell of the untouched wilderness. Highlights in the direct vicinity include the picturesque Itabaca Channel and the neighboring island of North Seymour, which is known for its blue-footed boobies and land iguanas. Cruise ships use the central Muelle de Baltra in Aeolian Cove, from which guests can easily reach the main island of Santa Cruz with the famous Charles Darwin Research Station and the lively Puerto Ayora thanks to short bus transfers and a ferry crossing.
The island of Baltra is the most important gateway to the Galápagos Islands and is characterized by its ecological airport located directly near the harbor. Embarkation usually takes place at the Baltra Dock, which can be reached in just a few minutes from the airport terminal thanks to free shuttles.
Airplane
Travel from the DACH region is via the international hubs of Quito (UIO) or Guayaquil (GYE), from where daily domestic flights depart for Seymour Airport (GPS) on Baltra. The flight time from the Ecuadorian mainland is approximately two hours and offers an impressive view of the volcanic archipelago already upon approach.
Transfer & Shuttle
After landing and passing through the national park control, guests reach the harbor basin at Baltra Dock in about five to ten minutes via free shuttle buses. There, the ship's own rubber boats (Zodiacs) are ready to bring passengers and luggage comfortably to the cruise yacht waiting in the channel.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long journey from Europe and the early flight departure times to the archipelago, an overnight stay in Quito or Guayaquil is recommended. Many cruise lines offer hotel packages that already include the transfer to the mainland airport as well as assistance with the mandatory registration for the Transit Control Card (TCT).
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The following also applies during the journey: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
