Cruise port Puerto Jimenez

Puerto Jimenez, an idyllic port town on the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica, is primarily a port of call for smaller cruise ships. Passengers are generally brought to the public pier in the town center by tender boat, as there are no large, dedicated cruise terminals. Thanks to good domestic flight connections and a manageable road network, a relaxed arrival can be planned.

Airplane

The most comfortable way to arrive for guests from the DACH region is via an international flight to Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) near San José, followed by a domestic flight. The local Puerto Jimenez Airport (PJM) is located only about 0.7 kilometers from the town center and is the primary hub for visitors. Domestic airlines such as Sansa Air and Green Airways offer regular flights from San José to PJM, with a flight time of approximately 45 to 50 minutes. From the local airport, you can easily reach most accommodations and the pier in Puerto Jimenez on foot or with a short taxi transfer in 5 to 10 minutes.

Car & Parking

Those wishing to explore Costa Rica's picturesque landscape can arrive by rental car from San José. The recommended route follows the well-maintained highways and main roads Route 1, Route 27, Route 34, Route 2, and finally Route 245 directly to Puerto Jimenez. For driving within Puerto Jimenez, a 4x2 SUV with high ground clearance is sufficient; however, a 4x4 vehicle is recommended for excursions deeper into the Osa Peninsula. For parking, a public parking lot on private property is available diagonally across from the pier, which is guarded and costs approximately 2000 Colones per day. Many hotels in town also offer free private parking for their guests.

Transfer & Pre-Cruise Hotel

Due to the long journey from Europe and the necessity of a domestic flight, it is strongly recommended to arrive in Puerto Jimenez at least one day before embarkation and to plan an overnight stay in one of the local hotels. This allows for a relaxed start to the cruise and provides buffer time for potential travel delays. Numerous accommodations in and around Puerto Jimenez, such as the Botanika Osa Peninsula Resort or Cabinas Jimenez, offer comfortable overnight options, sometimes including airport transfers and luggage storage. Private shuttle services can also be organized for transfers from PJM airport or from San José, offering a direct connection to your accommodation or the embarkation point.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
