Cruise ships dock at the Puerto Caldera Pier, from where the center of Puntarenas can be reached in about 20 to 30 minutes by shuttle or taxi, also providing travelers with convenient access to the fascinating national parks.
Puerto Caldera is an important commercial port on Costa Rica's Pacific coast that welcomes cruise ships. Since the port area is industrial and walking is prohibited, a free shuttle will take you from the ship to the port exit, where further transport options await. For guests from the DACH region, arrival is usually organized by plane with a subsequent transfer, with a pre-cruise hotel being highly recommended for a relaxed start.
Airplane
The nearest international airport is Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) near San José, approximately 57 kilometers away. Direct flights from the DACH region are available to this airport. An alternative option would be Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) in Liberia, which, however, requires a longer journey of about four hours to the port. Thanks to the good connection to the Autopista Jose Maria Castro Madriz (Route 27), you can reach the Pacific coast quickly.
Transfer & Shuttle
From Juan Santamaría Airport (SJO), you can easily reach the cruise port of Puerto Caldera by private transfer or taxi. The travel time is approximately 1 hour and 15 to 20 minutes, depending on traffic. Private shuttles also offer comfort with air conditioning and Wi-Fi. Taxis are also available, although prices should be agreed upon in advance. Cruise lines often offer their own transfer services, which facilitate the journey from the airport directly to the ship.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long journey from Europe, an overnight stay in a pre-cruise hotel is strongly advised to start your cruise rested and relaxed. Hotels can be found both in the capital, San José, and in the immediate vicinity of Puerto Caldera, especially in the tourist town of Puntarenas, which is about 20 to 28 kilometers away. Many accommodations in Puntarenas also provide a good base for enjoying the local atmosphere or nearby beaches.
Check-in & Embarkation
