Punta Arenas is located at the southern tip of Chile and is considered the fascinating gateway to Antarctica as well as to untamed Patagonia. The city on the shores of the legendary Strait of Magellan impresses with its maritime flair, colorful rooftops, and an eventful history as a former center of world trade. Visitors marvel at the magnificent Palacio Sara Braun, stroll through the historic Cementerio Municipal, or visit the central Plaza Muñoz Gamero, where the famous Magellan statue is considered a lucky charm. Cruise ships dock at the centrally located Muelle Arturo Prat, which is in direct proximity to the city center and, thanks to its excellent connections, allows for a convenient, short walk directly into the pulsing heart of this historic port city.
The port of Punta Arenas is the central starting point for expedition cruises to Antarctica as well as the Chilean Fjords and offers a centrally located mooring for passenger ships at the Muelle Arturo Prat. Due to the great distance and its location on the Strait of Magellan, travel from the DACH region typically takes place by plane via the Chilean capital.
Airplane
Presidente Carlos Ibáñez del Campo International Airport (PUQ) is located about 20 kilometers north of the port and is the most important hub for the region. Travelers from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland first fly to Santiago de Chile Airport (SCL) and reach Punta Arenas after an approximately three-and-a-half-hour domestic flight with airlines such as LATAM or Sky Airline.
Transfer & Shuttle
From the airport, the well-developed Ruta 9 highway leads directly to the city center and the port, with a travel time of approximately 20 to 25 minutes. To reach the Muelle Arturo Prat terminal or the Muelle Mardones located slightly further north, guests can conveniently use the organized shuttle services of the cruise lines or the licensed taxis and transfer services available at the airport.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long flight time and possible weather-related flight schedule changes in Patagonia, arriving at least one day before embarkation is advisable. Numerous hotels around the Plaza de Armas provide an ideal starting point, as the main tourist pier, Muelle Prat, is often within walking distance from there, allowing for a relaxed start to the expedition journey.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
