Rio de Janeiro is one of South America's most iconic cruise destinations, captivating visitors with its stunning location directly on the Atlantic. The port area in the revitalized Porto Maravilha district combines historical roots with modern architecture and a vibrant, cultural atmosphere right by the water. In the immediate vicinity, you will find the futuristic Museu do Amanhã, the Rio Art Museum, and the impressive Mural Etnias, which is considered one of the largest graffiti works in the world. Cruise ships dock at the central Pier Mauá, located right in the heart of the city. Thanks to the modern VLT tram and short walking distances, it offers excellent connections to the historic center and all other sights of the metropolis.
The cruise port of Rio de Janeiro, Pier Mauá, is located in the heart of the revitalized Porto Maravilha district, right on Praça Mauá. Thanks to its central location and modern infrastructure, the terminal is easily accessible from both the airports and the city's tourist centers.
Airplane
Galeão International Airport (GIG) serves as the most important gateway for travelers from the DACH region and is, for example, served by direct flights from Frankfurt. From there, you can reach the port, located about 20 kilometers away, in approximately 30 to 45 minutes. For domestic connecting flights within Brazil, Santos Dumont Airport (SDU) is also an option; it is located only two kilometers from Pier Mauá and, thanks to its proximity, allows for a particularly short journey to the ship.
Transfer & VLT
The terminal is excellently connected to the public transport network by the modern VLT (Veículo Leve sobre Trilhos) tram, with the Parada dos Museus and Parada dos Navios stops located directly in front of the terminal halls. Additionally, licensed yellow taxis and ride-sharing apps are available at the airports and the port, guaranteeing a safe and direct journey to Pier Mauá while offering a first look at the famous Olympic Boulevard.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long flight duration from Europe and the time difference, arriving at least one day before embarkation is recommended. An overnight stay in the districts of Copacabana or Ipanema allows for a relaxed arrival and offers the opportunity to visit world-famous sights such as Sugarloaf Mountain. From these hotels, you can comfortably reach the cruise terminal on embarkation day in about 20 to 30 minutes by taxi or a private transfer service.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents will generally provide you with a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually about one hour before the scheduled departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times may change at short notice.
