Returning to the ship

Macapa, a unique cruise port in the Brazilian Amazon Delta, is located directly on the equator and is typically reached from the DACH region via Fly & Cruise. Due to its geographical location, arrival requires forward-looking planning to ensure a relaxed start to your Amazon adventure.

Airplane

Your destination airport is Macapá International Airport (MCP), also known as Macapá−Alberto Alcolumbre International Airport. This is located pleasantly close to the city center of Macapa, at only around 2 to 3 kilometers. There are no direct international flights from Europe; travelers from the DACH region reach Macapa comfortably via stopovers in major Brazilian hubs such as Belém (BEL), Brasília (BSB), or São Paulo–Guarulhos (GRU). Airlines such as LATAM, Azul, and Gol offer regular connections to these hubs, thanks to which you can arrive relaxed in the equatorial city.

Transfer & Shuttle

From Macapá International Airport (MCP), you can reach the city and potential ship berths comfortably by taxi. The short distance of only about 2 to 3 kilometers ensures fast transfer times. In addition, ride-hailing services such as Uber are also available in Macapa, providing a flexible and convenient option for onward travel to the port or your pre-cruise hotel.

Pre-Cruise Hotel & Embarkation Notes

Given the long journey from the DACH region and the special logistics in a remote region of the Amazon, it is strongly recommended to arrive at least one day before the scheduled embarkation. This allows you to relax and acclimatize to the tropical climate and buffer any flight delays. The port of Macapa is a river port along the Amazon, with ships often docking in the city center or at Santana Harbor (about 18 km from Macapa). Please note that for some cruises, Macapa serves primarily as a port for official clearance, where leaving the ship may not be permitted.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The following also applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always observe the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.

Marco Zero

The iconic monument marks the exact line of the equator and allows visitors the unique experience of standing with one foot in the northern and one in the southern hemisphere at the same time, feeling the special energy of the center of the earth.

Orla de Macapá & Trapiche Eliezer Levy

The lively riverfront promenade with its cozy cafés invites you to take a relaxed stroll; additionally, the striking pier reaching far into the river offers the perfect view over the massive waters of the Amazon.

Useful tips

Fortaleza de São José de Macapá

The impressive Fortaleza de São José de Macapá is located approximately thirty minutes' drive from the port of Santana and is considered one of the largest and best-preserved fortifications in South America. A visit to this historic star-shaped fortress is worthwhile thanks to its unique architecture and wide panoramic views over the majestic Amazon River directly in front of the walls. The extensive grounds are perfect for a cultural walk, and the adjacent riverside promenade also invites you to linger at inviting cafés with local refreshments. Ideally, visit the site in the morning to explore the architecture in peace and return to the port relaxed at least ninety minutes before departure.

Returning to the ship

The return journey from Macapá city center or the Equator Monument to the port in Santana is easy to organize thanks to the well-developed road connection. Plan for about 30 to 40 minutes of travel time due to the distance and enjoy the relaxed drive through the Amazon Delta.

Taxi and Rideshare

Taxis are available at all times at central locations such as Praça Veiga Cabral or directly in front of the Fortaleza de São José, as well as at larger hotels. Additionally, you can conveniently use rideshare apps to reach the port terminal in Santana safely and reliably.

Cruise Line Shuttle Buses

Most ships offer organized transfers, which often depart from prominent points such as the Marco Zero Equator Monument or the waterfront promenade. These buses take you back to the pier easily and on time, providing a particularly stress-free return option thanks to direct coordination with the ship.

Orientation and Safety

In the Santana port area, the way to the ship area is clearly marked and guarded by local security personnel. Since the distance from the sights in Macapá to the port is long, it is best for guests to use a motorized vehicle for the entire return journey to reach the gangway comfortably and on time.
