Sur is a picturesque port city on the northeast coast of Oman and is considered the historical center of traditional shipbuilding on the Arabian Sea. As cruise ships usually anchor offshore, guests are taken directly to the centrally located Sur Jetty by tender boat. From this landing point, the picturesque Corniche and the city center are easily accessible on foot in just a few minutes.
Sur, a charming port city on the coast of the Gulf of Oman, is known for its traditional dhow shipyards and authentic Omani flair. Cruise ships anchor here off the coast, and passengers are brought ashore by tender boats as there is no dedicated cruise terminal. Arrival from the DACH region is usually by plane to Muscat, followed by a scenic drive.
Airplane & Transfers
The nearest international airport is Muscat International Airport (MCT), located approximately 213 to 231 kilometers from Sur. After arriving in Muscat, a transfer to Sur is recommended. Taxis take about 3 hours and 9 minutes for the journey and offer a comfortable direct connection. Alternatively, there is a daily Mwasalat bus service from Muscat Airport to Sur bus station, with a travel time of about 3 hours and 50 minutes. From there, the port is accessible by taxi, as local public transport in Sur relies on taxis.
Car
A rental car, which you can rent directly at Muscat International Airport (MCT), allows for flexible travel. The route to Sur follows well-maintained highways such as Route 23 (R23) and takes about 2 hours and 48 minutes to 3 hours and 9 minutes by car. There are also attractive stops along the route. In Sur itself, there is usually sufficient free parking available.
Pre-cruise hotel for a relaxed start
Due to long-haul flights from the DACH region and the approximately three-hour drive from Muscat to Sur, an overnight stay in a pre-cruise hotel is highly recommended. A stay in Muscat is ideal for exploring the capital and starting the onward journey to Sur in a relaxed manner. Many hotels in Muscat can also organize transfers to the port in Sur or serve as an ideal starting point for picking up a rental car. Hotels are also available in Sur itself.
