Port information & tips for Stavanger
Stavanger is the charming gateway to the Norwegian fjords and combines maritime history with modern Norwegian lifestyle at the highest level. The city impresses with its picturesque location directly on the water and an inviting atmosphere characterized by historic alleys and the lively harbour basin. Nearby, the characteristic white wooden houses of Gamle Stavanger, the architecturally impressive Norwegian Petroleum Museum, and the colourful shopping street Øvre Holmegate invite exploration. Cruise ships dock centrally at Skagenkaien or Strandkaien, meaning travelers are in the middle of the city center after just a few steps from the Stavanger Cruise Terminal and can easily reach all sights on foot thanks to the prime location.
Stavanger impresses with its central location, as cruise ships usually dock directly in the heart of the city at the Vågen harbor basin at the Skagenkaien or Strandkaien quays. Thanks to this first-class connection, you can reach the picturesque old town and the most important transport hubs within a few minutes' walk.
Airplane
Stavanger Airport Sola (SVG) is located about 15 kilometers southwest of the city center and is regularly served from the DACH region via Copenhagen, Oslo, or Amsterdam. The onward journey to the port is comfortable with the Flybussen (Airport Express), which takes you directly to the city center in around 20 to 30 minutes, or alternatively in about 20 minutes by taxi.
Ferry & Car
Travelers with their own vehicle use the E39 European route and also reach Stavanger easily via the Fjord Line ferry connection from Hirtshals in Denmark to Risavika. From the ferry terminal in Risavika, it is only a 20-minute drive to the central cruise piers, with secure parking garages such as P-Kyvik or P-Posten available for long-term parkers in the city center.
Train
Stavanger station is the terminus of the Sørlandsbanen, which offers a scenic connection from Oslo and is ideal for guests arriving a day in advance. Since the station is only about 500 meters from the port, you can reach your ship in less than ten minutes on foot and enjoy the maritime atmosphere of the city as soon as you arrive.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port and bear in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
