Port information & tips for Leirvik

Leirvik is the charming maritime center of the Sunnhordland region, picturesquely situated on the southern tip of the island of Stord on the Norwegian west coast. The town delights visitors with its relaxed Scandinavian flair, a lively harbor promenade, and sweeping views over the Hardangerfjord. Cultural highlights in the immediate vicinity include the Sunnhordland Museum with its historic buildings and the artistic Vidsteenparken, which invites you to stroll among modern sculptures. Cruise ships dock directly at the central quay in the port of Leirvik, providing guests with immediate access to the busy Borggata shopping street while making all the city's sights easily accessible within a few minutes' walk.

Leirvik, located on the island of Stord, is a picturesque destination in Fjord Norway and is easily accessible for cruise guests from the DACH region thanks to good regional connections and proximity to international airports. Ships usually dock directly at the quay, allowing for straightforward embarkation.

Car

The island of Stord, where Leirvik is located, is excellently connected to the mainland via the E39 European route, particularly via the Stordabrua (Stord Bridge) from the south (Haugesund) and a ferry connection from the north (Halhjem-Sandvikvåg). Public parking is available in the city center of Leirvik, suitable for short-term parking; however, specific long-term parking for cruise guests is rather limited directly at the harbor. Advance research into local providers or hotels with parking options is therefore recommended.

Airplane

The nearest airport is Stord Lufthavn, Sørstokken (SRP), about 13 kilometers from Leirvik, which has only a few direct connections, mainly to Oslo. For international guests from the DACH region, Bergen Airport (BGO) is the primary choice, with direct flights from German, Austrian, and Swiss airports. From Bergen, you can reach Leirvik in about 1.5 to 2 hours by express boat or a combination of bus and ferry (Halhjem-Sandvikvåg ferry connection to Stord). Taxis and rental cars are also available, allowing for flexible onward travel to the port.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Due to the longer journey from the DACH region and the need to often plan a transfer from Bergen Airport to Stord, arriving at least one day before embarkation is recommended. This allows for a relaxed start to the cruise without time pressure. In Leirvik and the surrounding area, there are several hotels and accommodations well-suited for an overnight stay. Early booking, especially during high season, is advisable to secure suitable accommodation near the harbor and minimize transfer times.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that your travel documents usually provide a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is generally about one hour before the scheduled departure.

The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times may change at short notice.
